An Thu An (born Nguyễn Thị Thu An in 2000) is a Vietnamese folk and contemporary singer.[1] She rose to national prominence after winning the Runner-up (Silver Prize) title in the Folk Music category at the prestigious Sao Mai National Singing Competition in 2022.[2] Known for her modern approach to traditional Vietnamese folk music, she is considered one of the prominent young faces of Vietnam's contemporary folk music scene.[3]
Early life and education
An Thu An was born in Ninh Bình Province, northern Vietnam.[4] Growing up in a family with no artistic background, she showed an early talent for music and won various local school awards. At the age of 18, she won the "Talented Beauty" award and finished in the top 10 at the Hoa Lu Beauty Pageant (a regional pageant in Ninh Binh).[5]
She pursued professional vocal training at the Military University of Culture and Arts (Trường Đại học Văn hóa - Nghệ thuật Quân đội) in Hanoi, graduating from the Intermediate Vocal Studies program.[2][4] Under formal mentorship, she refined her techniques, bridging classical vocal foundations with traditional folk styles.
Career
2022: Breakthrough at the Sao Mai Competition
In 2022, An Thu An entered the Sao Mai National Singing Competition, a long-running national television singing contest organized by Vietnam Television (VTV).
Competing in the Folk Music (Dòng nhạc Dân gian) category, she advanced to the national finals. In the grand finale, she earned the Runner-up (Silver Prize) in the Folk Music category.[2] Additionally, she received the "Most Popular Contestant" award based on audience votes.[3]
2023–present: Professional career
Following her breakthrough at Sao Mai, she officially adopted the stage name An Thu An (previously performing under her birth name, Thu An).[3] She began releasing professional music videos (MVs) that blend traditional Vietnamese elements with contemporary pop and folk arrangements (Dân gian đương đại).
In early 2024, she launched a major music project titled "An", featuring the lead single "Tứ thân" (a song highlighting traditional four-part dresses and lotus-silk weaving culture), collaborating with prominent music producers and directors.[3][5]
Aside from commercial releases, she frequently appears on major national cultural broadcasts by VTV. In 2025, she participated in a cultural-military mission to perform for soldiers stationed at the Spratly Islands (Trường Sa).[4]

An Thu An's vocal style features a bright, lyrical soprano tone. She is noted for her execution of northern Vietnamese folk vocal ornamentations, such as nảy hạt (vocal pearl-trills) and luyến láy (melismatic slides).
Deeply rooted in traditional folk music, she aims to modernize the genre using contemporary electronics and acoustic pop to make it more appealing to younger generations.[3] She cites veteran Vietnamese folk artists, including Thu Hiền and Anh Thơ, as her major artistic influences.
