Ananilea Nkya
Ananilea Nkya is a Tanzanian journalist, women’s rights advocate, and human rights activist.[1]
Early life and education
Nkya earned a master’s degree in journalism from Cardiff University in 1992 and a PhD in journalism from the University of Bradford.[2]
Career
Nkya began her media career at Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (formerly Radio Tanzania, Dar es Salaam). She became a founding member of the Tanzania Media Women’s Association (TAMWA) in 1987 and has served as its executive director from 2001.[1][3]
Award and leadership roles
In 2010, Nkya was presented the U.S. International Women of Courage Award by US Ambassador Alfonso Lenhardt, recognizing her leadership in advancing women’s rights in Tanzania. In April 2022, she was appointed chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Tanzania Media Foundation.[4][5]
Nkya also serves as the chairperson of Jukwaa la Katiba (Constitution Forum).[6][4]
