Andrew Tay is a Canadian choreographer, curator, and performance artist. Since 2020, he has served as the artistic director of the Toronto Dance Theatre (TDT), becoming the first queer person and the first person of colour to hold the position.[1][2]

Early life and education

Tay studied contemporary dance at Concordia University in Montreal.[3]

Career

In Montreal, Tay co-founded the performance collective Wants&Needs Danse, which has produced events such as Short&Sweet and Piss in the Pool, focused on experimental and site-specific dance works.[4]

He served as Guest Artistic Curator at the Centre de Création O Vertigo (CCOV), programming emerging artists and interdisciplinary performances.[5]

Tay was appointed artistic director of the Toronto Dance Theatre in March 2020.[1][2]

Artistic work

Tay's choreography often explores identity, queerness, and the politics of performance. His work incorporates unconventional bodies and aesthetics, and embraces contradiction and discomfort as part of the creative process.[2]

Selected works

Make Banana Cry

Make Banana Cry is a collaborative performance with Stephen Thompson that explores Asian identity, eroticism, and cultural representation. It has been presented at ImPulsTanz (Vienna), Kampnagel (Hamburg), MDT Stockholm, On the Boards (Seattle), and the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art.[6][7][8]

NESS

Tay collaborated with Toronto-based artist Ness Lee and Toronto Dance Theatre on NESS, presented at the Toronto Biennial of Art in 2022.[9]

Recognition

In 2022, Tay was named one of Concordia University’s "50 Under 50" alumni.[3]

Under his artistic direction, productions by Toronto Dance Theatre have received nominations for the Dora Mavor Moore Awards in categories such as Outstanding Production and Ensemble Performance.[10]
