Andris Mattson (born Oct 31, 1991) is a Latvian-American composer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and music producer. He is best known as a founding member of the soul trio Moonchild.[1]
Early Life
Andris Mattson was born on Oct 31, 1991, in Los Angeles, CA. He is the son of Lolita Ritmanis and Mark Mattson.[2][3]
Career
with Moonchild
In 2009, Andris Mattson began attending the USC Thornton School of Music where he met his future bandmates Amber Navran and Max Bryk. The three of them went on to form the group Moonchild in 2011. Together they have recorded six studio albums and one EP.[4] In 2022, Moonchild released their fifth album, Starfruit. The album received a nomination for Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album in 2023.[5] Moonchild’s work has been sampled by Mac Miller and Rapsody.[6]
Solo career
In 2015, Mattson released his debut solo EP Water under the moniker Wildflower.[7]
In 2021, he released his singer-songwriter EP North.[8][9] He followed up this release in 2025 with a full-length album of songs entitled the understory.[10]
In December 2025, Mattson released a live jazz album and short film on YouTube entitled FLUGEL.[11] The album features Mattson performing in his living room on his harmonized flugelhorn. Mao Sone in his Jjazz.net Monthly Disc Review writes "Mattson has gone beyond the flugelhorn itself to present a new vision for the next generation of brass performance, composition, and expression." [12] The album received airplay on BBC Radio 1 with Benji B. [13][14]
Mattson has also served as a collaborator on several projects. He helped write and record horn parts for The Internet’s album Hive Mind, played trumpet on the album Knower Forever by KNOWER, and recorded keys for J.Period’s song “All In Your Head” (feat. Dave Chapelle, Black Thought & Tiffany Gouché).[15]
Mattson has also written music for choir. His composition "Es Piedzimu Ziemeļos" (I was born in the North) with words by Dārta Apsīte, premiered at the XVI Latvian Song and Dance Festival in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the summer of 2026.[16]
