Andy Styles was a fictional footballer who appeared in the comic strips in the British boys' comic Roy of the Rovers during the 80s and 90s. He was a goalkeeper, playing for Melchester Rovers, and the Youth England. He first appeared in the strip in 1984.[1]

His nickname was Streaky.

Career

Club

Andy made his debut for the first team in January 1985 after Charlie Carter had damaged his elbow, after slipping in the snow at Roy's house on Christmas Day 1984. Andy had already gained the nickname 'Streaky' from his inconsistent form and in August 1985, he lost his place to Bob Wilson, as Roy looked to add experience to the team.

Andy was slightly injured in the Basran disaster of July 1986 and recovered quickly to regain his first team place and become a fixture in the Melchester team. Charlie Carter and to a lesser extent Walter Williams provided stiff competition for Streaky, but Andy remained the number 1 goalkeeper. Andy was eventually replaced as first choice by Nick "Rapper" Hardisty in March 1992.

Andy helped the Rovers to beat Real Santana in a tense penalty shoot out to become European Cup-Winners in his first season, he missed out on the Milk Cup Final the following year to Bob Wilson, but helped Rovers to the Littlewoods Cup in 1987 against Stambridge City (Andy saved a penalty, then got injured to be replaced by Roy in goal). He was part of the team which won the League Championship in 1988, the FA Cup in 1990 and the League Championship again in 1992.

Andy left the Rovers and joined Third Division Brentfield, retiring in 1999.
