Angela Birney

Angela Birney is an American politician who, since 2019, has been the mayor of Redmond, Washington. She is a member of the Democratic Party.

Early life and education[edit]

Birney was born in Seattle, Washington. After living in Auburn, her family moved to Richland. She holds a bachelor's in biology education from Eastern Washington University and a master's in education from Heritage University. She moved to Redmond in 1998.[1]

Political career[edit]

Birney first ran for city council in 2015.[1] She served as president of the council from 2018 to 2019.[2] Prior to city council, she was vice chair of Redmond’s Parks and Trails Commission.[3]

She was first elected mayor in 2019.[4][5] In 2021, she defended a plan proposed by King County to turn a neighborhood motel into a homeless shelter despite vocal constituent opposition to the plan.[6] In 2023, she disbanded an independent commission reviewing pay for city council members.[7] She was reelected in 2023.[8]

Personal life[edit]

Birney and her husband, Keith, have three children.[1]
