Anil Bhan is the Chairman Cardio-Vascular Surgery, Medanta The Medicity [1], NCR Delhi, India. Formerly he was Chief Cardiac Surgeon, Batra Hospital, New Delhi.
He served as a Co-founder of Max Heart and Vascular Institute, Saket, New Delhi, Director and Chief Co-ordinator, Cardio thoracic and Vascular Surgery, MHVI, Saket.
Additional Professor, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, AIIMS, New Delhi.
Early life and education
Dr. Anil Bhan did his schooling from C.M.S. Tyndale Biscoe School, Srinagar. He is awarded certificate of Honor as “Best All Round Boy” in school. Also awarded Certificate of Honor for Best Performance in Matriculation. Stood First in Kashmir Province.
He is a graduated from Medical College Srinagar – Distinction holder in Pharmacology, Pathology, Forensic Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery and Gynae/Obst.
He is recipient of Certificate of distinction for first rank in Pre – Medical Examination of University of Kashmir, received certificate of distinction for securing first position in order of merit in MBBS examination of University of Kashmir.

Achievements
- Part of the team that conducted the first successful Heart Transplantation in India under Professor Panangipalli Venugopal on 3rd August 1994.[2]
- Part of team that did the first Mechanical circulatory support in India 1996 at AIIMS under the leadership of Professor P. Venugopal.
- Performed more than 28,000 cardiac and vascular surgeries.
- The surgical spectrum includes:
- Aortic Aneurysm Surgery (largest experience of Aortic Surgery in India).
- On and off pump myocardial re-vascularization
- Pediatric Cardiac Surgery
- Valve repairs and replacement, including the Ross procedure.
- Minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
- Treatment of End Stage Heart Disease including Cardiac transplant and Ventricular Assist Device
- Associated with starting of four Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Programs in India.
- Part of IRAD (International Registry of Acute Aortic Dissections). This is a prestigious registry which has about 30 centers from the world and we are part of it. From India we are the only centre as a part of Registry. As per this Registry we have the best results in the Acute Aortic Dissections in the world today.
- Conducted surgery on thousands of neonates. (Children less than one month age) and infants.
- Conducted the youngest Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery for patient aged 20 months.[3](Ref LIMCA Book of Records and Hindustan Times New Delhi, 29th May 2009.)
- Did the first ECMO (Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), a life support system, in India in Year 2000. Accredited by Medtronics USA. Now multiple centers perform such procedures.
- Developed the Left Heart Bypass Technique and Technique of Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest for the Thoraco-Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms in India
- Trained more than 20 cardiac Surgeons while at All India Institute Of Medical Sciences and also in Private Practice. All of them are independent cardiac surgeons running cardiac Surgical Programs on their own all over the country.
- Did for first time in the country Hybrid VSD closure at Max Heart and Vascular Institute.
- Largest experience in Re-Do Surgeries in the country. I and my team conduct more than 200 re-do surgeries every year. (Pediatric and Adult).
Aortic surgery program
- Developed the largest Aortic Surgery program in India (conducted more than 1700 Aortic operations in children/adults, conducting 200 Aortic Surgeries every year).
- This includes 1100 Aortic Root surgeries (Largest individual experience)
- Achieved nearly 0% mortality for non-dissecting Ascending Aortic surgery
- Overall mortality for Type A Dissections: 2.5% (Accepted as per IRAD: 15-25%)

- Part of Principal Investigators at International Registry of Aortic Dissections. Only center from India as part of IRAD. Second center in Asia.
- One of the largest experiences on Redo-Aortic surgeries in the World. Initial experiences presented at Aortic Surgery Symposium in New York.
- Started one of the earliest endovascular programs of treatment of Aortic Diseases in collaboration with Dr. Sanjeev Sharma, Cardiac Radiologist, AIIMS, New Delhi (1997).

Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG)
- Published one of the earliest reports on angiographic follow-up of OPCAB (Beating Heart CABG) from India. Accredited by Medtronics(U.S.A.).(Annals of Thoracic Surgery.2000;vol.69(4): 1216-1221).[5]

- Published the data on adenosine preconditioning of the Myocardium in patients with ventricular dysfunction undergoing myocardial revascularization.

Pediatric cardiac surgery
- Described a new - operative technique for repair of supracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage. (Published in Annals of thoracic surgery- USA)[9]
- Described a new operative technique for coarctation of aortic with type - B aortic dissection(Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery USA)[10]
- Published one of the largest experience of arterial switch procedure for transposition of great arteries.(Indian Heart Journal)

- Did first Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO) in India.

- Did the youngest Ross procedure at forty-five days of life.

- Did for the first time in the world a combination of Ross Procedure with Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery in a 13 year old girl.
