Anju Sharma was born on 15th July, 1969 in Rajasthan, India, where her father served as a lawyer and later as a higher judicial services officer. Her mother was a housewife.

She was appointed as an IAS officer on 15th September, 1991. She belongs to Gujarat cadre[1] of IAS.

Early Life and Career[edit]

She is a member of the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) which falls under Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). She is currently Principal Secretary of Higher Education and Technical (H&TE), Government of Gujarat. She has been serving the Government at various senior level leadership positions for more than 27 years.

She started her career in Rajkot in Gujarat as an Assistant Collector. Subsequently, she worked as District Collector in Bharuch and Amreli and as DDO (District Development Officer) in Gandhinagar and Vadodara districts of Gujarat. She successfully led the district of Amreli during one of the worst droughts in recent times in 2000. She has worked with many other departments including Food, Revenue, Environment and Forests, Industry and Commerce, Health, Women and Child Development, and Education. She served as the Chief Executive Officer of Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority[2] for more than two years.

Anju Sharma is also the author of I of the Storm- Discover your true self[3], a book about personal development.

Education[edit]

She has received her degree in MBA in Finance and Marketing. She studied philosophy for her Civil Services. She also has received her Master’s in International Development Policy from Duke University, USA. She is now pursuing her Doctorate in the discipline of management. Her research focus is on Spiritual intelligence for managers.

Personal Life[edit]

She was married in 1994, to Dharmendra Sharma, a veteran Indian Air Force officer. He now runs an NGO called ARC (A Responsible Citizen) Foundation[4]. She has two children.

Spiritual Interests[edit]

She does her first course of Vipassanā in 2013 and since then she has been regularly practicing. A believer in Yoga and Ayurveda, she is deeply inclined towards Indian / Oriental philosophies of Buddhism, Bhagwad Gita and Advaita. She seeks spirituality with a scientific temper. She believes that spirituality means freedom. She wishes to simplify spirituality by delinking it from religion, rituals and texts.
