Anna Katharina Bonkhoff is a German neurologist and clinician–research fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School. She is noted for her research into sex differences in neurological disease—particularly stroke and Alzheimer’s disease—and for her public engagement on the topic, including features in major publications such as the Harvard Gazette.[1]

Early life and education

Bonkhoff studied medicine at RWTH Aachen University in Germany, completing clinical rotations at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology in London and at the University of Cambridge.[2]

Bonkhoff began her neurology career at the University of Cologne before moving to the United States to join Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School as a research fellow in the Department of Neurology.[3] She is a resident physician in the Harvard Mass General Brigham Neurology Program.[4]

Bonkhoff’s work addresses sex-specific differences in brain lesions and functional outcomes after stroke. In a multicentre study using MRI-GENIE and GISCOME datasets, she and colleagues reported that certain lesion patterns—particularly in the left posterior cerebral circulation—were more strongly associated with stroke severity in women than in men.[6]

She has applied Bayesian modelling to identify sex-related differences in the white matter substrates of aphasia following stroke, finding distinct patterns between men and women.[7] Her broader research on sex differences in age-associated neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, was published in Science Advances in 2025.[8]
