Anna Shay (December 31, 1960 — June 1, 2023)[1] was a Japanese-born American socialite, businesswoman, philanthropist and television personality.[2] She was known as a cast member on Netflix's reality television series Bling Empire.[3]
Early life
Anna Shay was born in Tokyo, Japan, on December 31, 1960,[4] as the eldest child of Edward Albert Shay,[5] an American[6] engineer and businessman who founded the leading global defense and government services contractor, Pacific Architects and Engineers (PAE), in 1955,[7] and Ai Oizumi "Ai-San" Shay, a part-Japanese, part-Russian businesswoman who came from Russian aristocracy.[8] She had a younger brother, Allen E. Shay.[9][10] She had an older half-brother, Dr. Jun Oizumi, from her mother's first marriage.[5]
Shay and her family moved from Japan to Hancock Park, Los Angeles in 1968.[10]
Shay graduated from The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks. She attended the University of Southern California, amongst other colleges.[1]
Shay was accompanied by security guards in her youth. She would often sneak away from her guards, resulting in the termination of their employment.[10] She doubled her security team, and was accompanied at all times, after her father's death, including at her vast estate.[11]
Career
Shay was expected not to work while her parents were still alive.[12] Her father died in 1995.[13] Her mother died on September 23, 2015. She was 92.[5]
Shay dedicated her talents to the arts after graduating from college, directing her passion toward the music and film industry.[1]
Shay started working for the Shay Foundation[14] after her father's death, a non-profit founded by her parents; focusing on education, arts, performing arts, and music.[15]
Shay and her younger brother, Allen - who assumed control of Pacific Architects and Engineers (PAE)[16] as chairman and CEO following their father's death - sold the company, on August 16, 2006, to Lockheed Martin,[17] in an all-cash $1.2 billion deal.[18]
Shay made her television debut on January 15, 2021, as an original cast member on the Netflix[3] reality television series Bling Empire.[19] She quickly became a fan-favorite, and was a breakout star.[20] Upon her casting, she thought she was being asked to help in a behind-the-scenes consultant capacity.[21] She forgot to cash her paychecks from Netflix for the first season.[22] The second season premiered on May 13, 2022.[23] The third season premiered on October 5, 2022.[24] The series was cancelled in April 2023.[25] She appeared in 22 episodes.[26] The series was produced by Jeff Jenkins Productions.
Charity work
Shay had devoted a keen interest in philanthropy.[1]
Shay previously served as a board member for the George Lopez Foundation, which raises awareness about kidney disease and organ donation.[27]
Personal life
Shay kept a very low-profile personal life.[6]
Shay had an estimated net worth of $600 million.[28] She had a jewelry collection worth $13.4 million.[29]
Shay's birthday was December 31,[30] however, she would thank her family, her friends, and her fans, via social media, on or around January 31, annually.[31]
Shay was married and divorced four times. Three of her former husbands were never named, and each divorce was amicable.[6] One of her ex-husbands was from Ireland.[12]
Shay's marriage to Ken Kemp,[18] a third generation firefighter,[1] lasted three years and resulted in the birth of her only son, Kenneth "Kenny" Edward Shay-Kemp,[5][1] in 1993.[10][6] She raised her son as a single mother after separating and divorcing her ex-husband.[1] BuzzFeed published a special story about her son on February 12, 2015. He is described as a "passionate stoner" who owns a collection of bongs worth half-a-million dollars.[32] Her son made a guest appearance during the fourth episode in the first season of Bling Empire.[4] She had one granddaughter, Alessi, from her son's marriage to daughter-in-law, Nicolette.[2][1]
Shay was arrested in Orange County, California, on January 21, 2010, on one count of unlawfully driving a vehicle while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, a drug, or under the combined influence of alcoholic beverages and drugs. The case was dismissed in May 2011, after she completed a 60-day outpatient program and had violated no laws.[33]
Shay was sued by David Zerbib on June 18, 2015. Zerbib, who was employed as a security guard between January and March 2015, claimed she had sexually harassed him and that her son had threatened to kill him. Zerbib went on to claim he had suffered "severe emotional injuries, anxiety, distress, humiliation and depression" and that he was owed more than $100,000 in unpaid wages. He also claimed she had prevented him from retrieving his car which was left parked at her home once he had resigned, meaning he had to hire a rental car for a week. Shay denied all the allegations. The case was settled out of court in 2016, and officially "dismissed with prejudice", meaning it could never go before a court again. Details of the settlement were not made public.[34]
Shay purchased a smaller mansion in Beverly Hills, California, for $5.75 million in 2020.[35] Her Sunset Boulevard mansion - which she bought in 2009 for $9.4 million[36] - sold for $13.8 million in 2021.[37] She also owned her childhood home in Tokyo.[38][1]
Death
Shay died from a stroke on June 1, 2023.[1] She was 62.[2] She is survived by her son Ken, her daughter-in-law Nicolette, and her granddaughter Alessi, along with her extended family.[1] Her obituary was published by the Los Angeles Times on June 9.[1]
Shay's death was announced to the public on June 5 in a statement by her family to People: "It saddens our hearts to announce that Anna Shay, a loving mother, grandmother, charismatic star, and our brightest ray of sunshine, has passed away at the early age of 62 from a stroke. Anna taught us many life lessons on how not to take life too seriously and to enjoy the finer things. Her impact on our lives will be forever missed but never forgotten."[2]
Shay's Bling Empire co-stars Cherie Chan, Christine Chiu, Kevin Kreider, Kim Lee, Kane Lim, Kelly Mi Li, Jaime Xie, Guy Tang, Mimi Morris, and Dorothy Wang paid tribute on social media.[39] Jeff Jenkins, the show's executive producer, led the tributes.[40] Golden, Netflix's official social media channel dedicated to celebrating the pan-Asian diaspora, also paid tribute.[41]
