Annavarapu Ramaswamy or Annavarapu (born 23 March 1926) is an Indian violinist who was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1996 by the Government of India.[2] He served the All-India Radio from 1948 to 1986.[3] In 1988, the All-India Radio (AIR) ranked him as a top grade carnatic musician.[4]

Early life[edit]

Annavarapu Ramaswamy was born in Somavarapupadu village, West Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh in 1926. He was born into a musician family, his father was a Nadaswaram player and his brother, Annavarapu Gopalam was an Ghatam artiste at All India Radio. He started learning music from Maganti Jagannadham Chowdary, and later from Parupalli Ramakrishnayya Pantulu[5]

Contributions[edit]

In the past eight decades, he has been presenting concerts in several countries such as USA, Canada, UK, France, Muscat, Bahrain, Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia, Doha and Sri Lanka. In 1998 and 2012, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations awarded him the Outstanding artiste title under Violin category.[6][7] He has been awarded TTK memorial award by Madras Music Academy.[8] He has discovered new Ragas, namely Vandana and Sri Durga. He has also discovered new Talas, namely Trinetradi Tala and Vedadi Tala.[9] He is a performer, composer of several Varnams and Kritis as well as a teacher who has taught vocal, Veena, Flute and Nadaswaram, in addition to the violin instrument.[10]. Under his tutelage, his students organise the Hyderabad Tyagaraja Aradhana Music Festival which is an annual five day music festival held at Shilparamam, Hyderabad along the lines of Tyagaraja Aradhana.
