Ansuman Roy (Bengali : অংশুমান রায় ,19th August 1936 - 22nd April 1990) was a successful Bengali Folk singer during the late 1960s and late 1988 and onwards. He was born to Lt. Rampada Roy and Lt. Bivabati Roy[citation needed], he hailed from the current district of Jhargram, West Bengal, India.

Early Life and Career

He passed his School Finals from Jhargram[citation needed] and carried on research work on Bengali Folk Literature and Folk tunes of South West Border of West Bengal for 10 years. He also showed interest and a special aptitude for Indian Classical Music and Light Music since boyhood.

His songs were broadcast from All India Radio (AIR), Calcutta since 1959.[citation needed]

He delivered lecture demonstrations on Folk Music before the research scholars in the Department of Anthropology[citation needed] and attended seminars at a few universities in Kolkata[citation needed], namely, Calcutta University, Rabindra Bharati University (1967) and Jadavpur University. In 1975, he was awarded the Bangabandhu Gold Medal, by the Government of Bangladesh for his song "Shono Ekti Mujibar er theke", written by Lt. Shri. Gouri Prasanna Majumdar and sung by Roy. This record was published by Hindusthan Records Company in 1971.[citation needed]

In July 1978 he went to Havana, Cuba to attend the 11th World festival of Youth and Students as an Indian delegate[citation needed]. He was also awarded the "Best Playback Singer (Male) for the song "Ghochang Foo" from the film Char Murti(1978)[citation needed]. During his musical life time, he worked with Sudhin Dasgupta, Aloke Nath De, Pulak Bondhopadhaya, Gouri Prasanna Majumdar, Sibdas Bandhopadhaya, Manna De, Sandhya Mukherjee, Banasree Sengupta, Haimanti Shukla, Hemanta Mukherjee, Shaymal Mitra, Ajoye Das, Manabendra Mukherjee, Ashok Roy, Jatileswar Mukherjee, Dinendra Chaudhury........... and with others at his time.

Personal Life


He was married to Smt Kamala Roy (Banerjee). They have two sons, Bhaskar Roy (who is a singer in his own rights at present in Kolkata) and Antar Roy (guitarist in Kolkata), and one daughter, Meita Guha Roy (presently settled in Mumbai).
