Anthony Coutinho and Company is an undertaker and bookshop in Karachi, Pakistan.

Anthony Coutinho & Co. is located at Anthony Coutinho House, Clarke street, Karachi.[1]

History[edit]

Burial services (mainly Christian) have been performed by Anthony Coutinho & Company since 1885. The stately funeral services offered by this renowned Goan undertaker include some masterpiece tombstones carved by the craftsmen of the company still survive in the Gora Qabaristan, Karachi. The office still exists near St. Patrick's Cathedral, but it has all but stopped functioning. More recently, the St. Joseph's Association has been providing these services.[2]

Claim to fame[edit]

A declassified Interior Ministry file (No F.16-3/51-public) reveals that the casket in which Shaheed-e-Millat Liaqat Ali Khan was buried was made by Anthony Coutinho & Co. In January 19, 1953, Anthony Coutinho & Co wrote to the officer in-charge of the Defence Ministry that an amount of Rs 500 was outstanding since 17 October 1951.[3]

The marble for the Monument to Christ the King in Karachi was imported from Carrara, Italy through Anthony Coutinho and Company.[4]

Until 2015, they were one of two undertakers approved by the British Deputy High Commission Karachi in cases of the death of a British national.[5]
