Taylor Represented New Zealand at the Commonwealth games in the Light Welterweight division.[1] Taylor also won two senior national titles in his amateur career before turning pro.[2] Taylor is part of the Craig Thomson boxing stable.

Taylor vs Askew[edit]

In August 2015, Taylor fought Darren Askew for the WBU World Super Lightweight Title.[3][4] Askew was dominating the whole fight, winning every single round and dropping Taylor five times, all caused by body shots. Taylor's Corner at one point threw in the towel at one point of the fight when Taylor dropped, however Taylor refused to stop and the fight was resumed. In the twelve and last round Askew was up on points, winning every round. All Askew needed to do was keep moving and waste a round to win the fight, However instead Askew tried to go for the knockout. In the last thirty seconds of the fight, Askew got caught and was cornered against the ropes. After receiving multiple shots, Askew started to lower his hands and the referee stop the fight making Taylor the winner by TKO.[5]

The commissioning body of the night (New Zealand Professional Boxing Association) released this statement saying "For 11 rounds Darren Askew gave Anthony Taylor a thorough boxing lesson. Taylor was knocked down to the canvas in rounds 7 and 11, but got up and came back again. Askew was boxing beautifully and decisively. In round 12, instead of Askew taking it easy and win on Unanimous Points, he had a "blood rush" to win by knock out, and got caught himself against the ropes. he got battered by many hard shots. The referee watched carefully, and when his eyes rolled back and dropped his hands, the referee stopped the bout at 2 minutes 23 seconds."[6][7]

Two days after the fight Askew and his team claimed that the person reffing the fight was impartial and was trying his best to give Taylor the best chance to win from long counts to killing time to give Taylor a break. Askew team demanded the WBU to either overturn the decision or order a rematch between the two.[8]

The WBU reviewed the footage and in the end was happy with the turnout of the result and the performance of the referee. However they awarded Askew an opportunity to fight for the Interim WBU World Title in the near future. If Askew wins the Interim title he will be able to have his rematch against Taylor.[9]

Taylor received broken ribs from the fight.
