Anustup Basu

Anustup Basu (1971 - ) is an Indian academic and occasional filmmaker who currently resides in the United States. He is Associate Professor of English, Critical Thought, and Cinema-Media studies and Senior Fellow, Unit for Criticism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.[1] . Born and raised in India, Basu got his undergraduate and MA degrees at Jadavpur University, Calcutta. He completed his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in 2005. He has been a part of the University of Illinois faculty since 2005. Basu’s work has largely been on the Indian modernity question, viewed primarily through the lens of film and media cultures and their politics. His works include Bollywood in the Age of New Media (2010)[2] and Hindutva as Political Monotheism (2020)[3] Basu has worked intermittently in film and television, mostly with Suman Mukhopadhyay. He was the executive producer of the 2005 cult film Herbert which won the Indian National Award for Best Bengali film. In recent times, Basu has been the co-screenplay writer of the Hindi feature film Nazarband.
