Early life
Ape Amma was born in Colombo. She was very interested in cooking from her childhood. She lived within walking distance to the Port of Colombo, and people from different communities around Sri Lanka and India, especially Telugu and Malayalam speaking communities, lived close to the Port of Colombo. So many families living around this area cooked different dishes from different communities. Because she lived together with many families like that, she had to practice cooking different recipes from different cultures from a young age. And her grandfather used to practice Sri Lankan folk medicine, so she gained more knowledge about folk medicine from her mother.
She was the youngest girl in the family. Her mother was busy most of the time because she was doing sari embroidery at home, and she was a big help to her mother in cooking because her elder sisters were studying in hostels. She was able to cook on her own at the age of 11.[2] Her sisters weren't able to cook because they were receiving hostel education. She was a very social child and used to participate in events at the church, the temple, and the kovil, and lived together with a diverse community.
Career
Ape Amma is a trained government teacher (1st Rank teacher) in Sri Lanka. She has also learned child psychology and mass communication during her special teaching training period. After she got her teaching appointment, she worked in many different schools in different parts of Sri Lanka (both difficult rural areas and in towns) during her teaching career. She used to teach different subjects in those schools and also worked as a home science teacher.
She has worked as a scouting teacher, ranking up to wood badge in Sri Lanka.
After she retired from teaching in a government school, she started teaching in the official language department of Sri Lanka to government servants. After she completely retired from government work, she started the YouTube channel on December 21st, 2016.
Youtube Success
Most of the content on the Ape Amma channel is done in Sinhalese, but since many videos have subtitles included, even the Tamil and Muslim communities follow the recipes of Ape Amma too. She has two other channels: one in English called "Inspiring Mom[3]" and another kids channel called "Ape Amma Vidyalaya[4]" specially made for school kids. Her specialty is that she doesn't use artificial flavors in her lunch menus. Another special thing is that she also teaches food processing and storing methods, not just cooking recipes. And after three and a half years of doing YouTube channels, she has crossed 248 million views with 1,425,000 subscribers and more than 1,000 videos (by June 2020). Her main aim on YouTube is to stop people from eating takeaways and help them make all the tasty dishes at home. It's clear that this effort has been successful because of the number of subscribers and views this channel is gaining daily.
