Apollo Justice, known as Housuke Odoroki (王泥喜 法介 一 Odoroki Housuke) in original Japanese language versions, is a fictional defense attorney in Capcom's Ace Attorney video game series. He first appears as the protagonist in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. He later reappears in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies as a playable character alongside titular character Phoenix Wright (character) and new character, Athena Cykes, and is the secondary main character of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice, as well as being the focus of that game's story.
Design[edit]
According to Kazuya Nuri, Apollo's creator and designer, he tried to strike the perfect balance between making Apollo seem "cool", while also making him a character that players would become attached too, and find adorable. Beginning with a mostly blank slate, they gave him several distinct traits that swayed heavily from what players would be used to, to distinguish him from the previous protagonist, Phoenix Wright. These included his hot-blooded personality and his distinct bangs and red suit, making him a contrast to the more laid back nature of Phoenix. His Japanese name given name, "Housuke" (法介) is a play on words meaning "law boy", while his surname, Odoroki, comes from "surprise". This makes his full Japanese name a play on his occupation and role in the series, roughly meaning "surprising boy of law". In the Japanese version of the game, he was designed to speak in a rather distinctive manner, using the personal honorific "ore", and referring to most people, even close friends, with their surname followed by the honorific "san".
His name in the English version was chosen to have a roughly similar meaning to his Japanese counterpart, with "Apollo" being both a reference to the Greek god of the sun Apollo, and to the Apollo Program, while Justice is an obvious nod to his occupation.[1][2]
Characteristics[edit]
As of Spirit of Justice, Apollo is a criminal defense attorney who runs a law firm within the fictional country of Khura'in. Prior to this, he worked as a green-horn attorney at the Gavin Law Offices, both before, and during the first episode, of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. Following his boss's arrest, he then became a junior lawyer at the Wright Anything Agency, where he stayed for a few years, throughout the majority of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, Dual Destinies, and Spirit of Justice, before leaving the agency to take over his late father's firm. He has the power to "perceive" the most minuet of habits and tics, in which he enters a state where time appears to slow down drastically, and he can scan the subject's entire body. His bracelet, which he inherited from mother along with the genes giving him his power, acts as an indicator for when he should enter said state.
Apollo is a hot-blooded individual, who is defined by his fiery tendencies and personality. This includes his "Chords of Steel", which he trains every day by shouting from 5AM, and his catchphrase of "I'm fine!" which he loves to shout out at the top of his voice. He has a strong self of self-deprecation, often times making jokes at his own expense, being particularly found of cracking lawyer joke's. He has a strong sense of justice, and is rather founded of making puns based on his own surename. Just like his mentor and ex-boss, Phoenix Wright, he typically takes murder cases, seeking to acquire a complete acquittal for his clients. He exhibits, and inherits, much of the same traits as Phoenix when it comes to his techniques in handling cases, in particular his tendency to use Perry Mason moment's, and proving his clients' innocence by revealing the true perpetrator in court.
