"Apple" is a song recorded by South Korean girl group GFriend for their ninth extended play 回:Song of the Sirens. The song was released as the title track of the EP on July 13, 2020 by Source Music. The Japanese single album 回:Song of the Sirens ~Apple~ was released on October 21, 2020 by King Records, including the Japanese versions of "Apple" and "Tarot Cards".[1]

Composition[edit]

The song was written and produced by Frants, Pdogg and "hitman" bang. Several other producers also participated in writing the song: Hwang Hyun from MonoTree, Hannah Robinson, Richard Phillips, Alex Nese, Chendy, Noh Joo-hwan, Kim Jin and Gu Yeo-reum from Makeumine Works, Lee Seu-ran and Eunha and Yuju from GFriend.[2] According to Source Music, the song has a "mystical atmosphere" that can be noticed by the presence of the theme of temptation used for the song as well as for the music video.[3] The song was described by Pressreels' Bill K. Byron as "a trendy lead sound with retro, and a pop genre song with exquisite blend of vocal chops reminiscent of Siren’s song".[4] It also provided a radical conceptual change for the group with the introduction of the "cool witch" concept.[5][6]

On November 9, 2020, a rearranged version of the song was released in the group' studio album 回:Walpurgis Night.[7]

Chart performance[edit]

The song debuted and peaked at number 54 on the Gaon Digital Chart for the week ending July 18, 2020.[8] The song also placed at number 7 on the componing Download Chart and number 74 the week of the release of the song on the componing Streaming Chart.[8]

Music video[edit]

On June 17, 2020, a source reported that: "GFriend recently wrapped up filming the music video for their title track. Throughout the filming, the staff on set were surprised by GFriend’s shocking transformation."[9] The music video was then released on HYBE Labels' YouTube channel on July 13, 2020, along with the EP. It was directed by Guzza of Lumpens. On July 18, a choreography version of the music video was released.

The music video features the members of the group as white witches who were then transformed into black witches in the second half of the video. According to Bazaar from Harper's Bazaar Korea, the apple tree shown in the video represents a transition between good and evil members.[10]
