"Dance Floor Darling" is a song by Kylie Minogue taken from her fifteenth studio album Disco (2020). The song was sent to BBC Radio 2 on 24 April 2021.[1]
Background and composition[edit]
Kylie teased the title of the song, changing the cover image of her Infinite Disco playlist on Spotify to bear the title. "Dance Floor Darling" was co-written by Kylie, Maegan Cottone and its producer Sky Adams. It runs for three minutes and thirteen seconds, and features a tempo change after the song's middle eight. Kylie has cited "Dance Floor Darling" as one of her favourite songs on Disco.
From the liner notes of Apple Music, Kylie said:
“ | There are songs on the album that have another meaning to them, or a slight melancholy. "Dance Floor Darling" doesn't have any real depth to it, but I think it feels like a hug. It feels like a wedding reception where everyone's eaten sufficiently, had a few drinks, all the official stuff's out of the way, and – especially once the track speeds up in the middle eight – Gramps is on the dance floor. It makes me picture David Brent busting out his dad moves. We wanted escapism, and we committed to it. | ” |
Release[edit]
On 2 April 2021, a slightly edited radio mix premiered on BBC Radio 2. The song featured slight and subtle changes, including a laugh near the end of the track. On 23 April 2021, "Dance Floor Darling" was added to BBC Radio 2's B-List.[1][2][3] The Official Charts Company later confirmed the song as a single and revealed the artwork being used on 18 May.[4] Various forms of social media promotion were used by Minogue in order to promote the single. On Twitter, Minogue thanked BBC Radio 2 for adding the song to their playlist and interacted with fans.[5] On TikTok, she re-posted multiple videos of fans using the song in their creations.[6] Furthermore, video clips showing Minogue dancing along to the song in various outfits were posted on several platforms.[7]
Live performances[edit]
Kylie performed "Dance Floor Darling" on Infinite Disco, after a small intro of "I Should Be So Lucky". This performance was also used for Kylie's appearance at iHeartRadio's Can't Cancel Pride broadcast on 4 June 2021.[8] Kylie also performed the song during her set at Global Citizen Live, a 24-hour broadcast, on 25 September 2021.[9]
