Apples, Oranges, Lemons & Limes is a 2022 North American film written & directed by Pat Mitchell and produced by Ashley LaRue. Pat Mitchell also serves as cinematographer, editor, sound engineer and producer of the film as well. It has a runtime of 45 minutes.[1]

Plot[edit]

A timid young man chronically suffers from social anxiety. At a party, an unlikely encounter inspires a night of drinking, joy and romance.

Development[edit]

"I remember thinking about two people walking down a street drunk and wanted to put a hypothetical story behind it. We also tend to have a stigma against young adults drinking. I think lots of movies portray younger generation drinkers as irresponsible and reckless. I thought it would be nice to show it as a celebration once again and put some delight into that rather than the darker takes on the topic. I was a young drinker and didn't have much recklessness going around. I wanted to bring those feelings I had on screen." - Pat Mitchell[2]

Production[edit]

Apples, Oranges, Lemons & Limes was filmed in five weekend nights with all female crew.

The film was shot with no permits involved. The minimal guerrilla production took place in neighbors of Fort Myers, Lehigh Acres & Punta Gorda (Southwest Florida) between 11pm - 2am. Deeply inspired by Neo-Noir and French New Wave, it explores themes of social anxiety, missed connections, growing pains, positivity in alcohol consumption, friendship, love, missed connections, empathy, women's empowerment, good consciousness and much more.[3]

Reception[edit]

It received 12 out of 15 total nominations at the Triborough Film Festival, granting the film an Astor Award for Overall Excellence at in 2023. Under Mitchell's direction and editing, the film won over 340 awards worldwide in its 2-year film festival cycle, granted one of the best directorial and editorial feats of all time.[4]

The main cast all gained awards and nominations in best acting. Critics agree, Leading duo Calvin Waldau and Skye Marie Sena gave a powerhouse performance winning over 20 awards respectively in their leading role debuts. The supporting cast also gained attention of their own. Valeria Di Baboo won 18 awards as Best supporting actress including Best of the Season by South America Awards.[5] Juan Rodriguez Leon earned over 10 awards as best supporting actor. [6]

Festival[edit]

It received 12 out of 15 total nominations at the Triborough Film Festival, granting the film an Astor Award for Overall Excellence at in 2023. [7] Under Mitchell's direction and editing, the film won over 340 awards worldwide in its 2-year film festival cycle, granted one of the best directorial and editorial feats of all time.

Richard Propes agrees "The award-winning music by Andrew Scott Foust is effective throughout and Mitchell's own lensing for the film captures both the warmth and potential menace of residential streetlights and simply walking down the street with one another. It's all quite nicely done.

Existing in a weird space between short film and feature, this just shy of 45-minute film accomplishes quite a bit during its time and the self-taught Mitchell is definitely a filmmaker to watch in the future. With a strong ensemble cast and talented production team, Mitchell has crafted a relatable and engaging film that touches the heart and the mind with compassion, understanding, and tenderness."[8]

Filmthreat.com of Sumner Forbes praises "Apples, Oranges, Lemons & Limes doesn’t attempt to reinvent the wheel, but Mitchell knows where the story’s strengths lie. As such, he is willing to let the cast drive the film’s energy. The film is a fun watch, full of enough switches in tone to help it stand out among the crowd of indie shorts with a junior cast." [9]

"I will say that, at 45 minutes, it feels a touch long but obviously not long enough for a feature but there were only a few instances where you noticed the time playing a part. Overall AOLL is a nicely directed short/medium movie that shows plenty of directorial promise."[10]

Kirk S. Fernwood of OneFanFim.com says "So, in total, “Apples, Oranges, Lemons, & Limes” combines purposeful understatement and youth-driven narrative structure with fully poignant messages applicable for everyone, doing so in a manner that reminds us that we ALL have our uncertainties, inwardly and outwardly, but that there ARE ways OUT, and that sometimes, the solutions can come from the most unexpected places and people, leading us to a formidable yet fulfilling journey to freedom we might have thought forever elusive."[11]

ShortFilmsMatter.com review states "As the tale progresses, it becomes clear that this is not your typical love story – it is a nuanced and refreshing portrayal of the messy, complicated nature of young love. The film packs an emotional punch that will undoubtedly resonate with viewers of all ages.

In summary, Pat Mitchell’s romantic drama is a beautifully crafted short film that delivers a charming and tender tale of youthful passion. With great acting and excellent production values, this coming of age story speaks to anyone who has experienced the thrills and confusion of young love. Highly recommended."[12]

Swati Verma of UK Film Review describes the film as purposeful within each genre it possess. "Apples, Oranges, Lemons and Limes talks about devising one’s personalized mantra to combat social anxiety issues as it is different for different people and the methods used by one may or may not work for the other person. The short film reiterates that popularity and being beautiful do not mean that life would be free from all problems. The suspense thriller restates that one should be courageous enough to give love a second chance and not hide romantic feelings due to a bad experience in the past. The romantic drama tells that people shouldn’t be competing in the race of fitting in but trying to be not afraid of true to what they are is the best policy in life. The cinematic piece also discusses the significance of taking responsibility for our happiness ourselves rather than putting the burden on their shoulders for the same can be detrimental to the relationships we share with them."[13]
