Apurba Dutta (Bengali: অপূর্ব দত্ত; born 1951) is an Indian poet. Dutta wrote in Bengali. Dutta is a renowned name in contemporary Bengali literature. He started his literary voyage with poetry as his first choice, but he possesses equal amount of adroit and dexterity in other fields too, especially in the area of children’s and juvenile literature. He has stamped his distinction in Bengali Rhymes-writing and is considered as one of the leading Rhymes-writers in Bengali language.[1] It has been claimed that perhaps there has been no greater talent in Children’s Bengali literature since Sukumar Ray.

Biography[edit]

Apurba Dutta was born in Ranaghat, a suburban town in Nadia district of West Bengal, India. Son of late Nanilal and late Latika Dutta, Apurba’s main source of inspiration behind his literary aptitude flowed from his mother. Apurba moved to Kolkata permanently much later once he began his vocational life as a banker. A brilliant student, Apurba completed schooling from Ranaghat PalChowdhury Higher Secondary School at the age of fifteen, a year earlier than usual. Subsequently, at the age of eighteen he graduated from Krishnanagar Government College with honors in Political Science followed by a successful completion of Master’s Degree in the same subject from University of Calcutta. Later he obtained a second Master’s Degree in English literature from University of Calcutta as well. He was also an ardent cricket lover.

His initial literary cultivation began through penning poetry. However, he became highly popular for his contribution in Bengali rhyme especially geared towards young readers. Nonetheless, apart from poetry and rhyme, Apurba Dutta also authored stories, novels, plays and essays. Apurba Dutta’s writings have been published through a total of 69 titles. Yet there are still many manuscripts that have never been published.

As a poet he has visited USA, Bangladesh and eight countries in Europe, namely Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy and Russia. He was invited as a poet, specially for presenting his rhymes, in Banga Mela, Chicago, USA in 2005. He has visited Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra (Australia)[2] in June-July 2010 on being invited by Bangla Sahitya Sansad as a guest poet in Bangla Shishu-Kishore Sahityer Asor. As an elocutionist Apurba Dutta performed at various international events as well as on television and radio where he recited his poetry and rhymes. Though his poems and rhymes are recited by all eminent elocutionists, Apurba himself has earned a distinction in reciting his own poems with lots of ease and excellence. Some of his creations are recorded in audio-album by notable reciters as well as by himself.

His only child Aveek, his wife, Dola, and their son (Apurba’s grandson) Adri are presently residing in New York.

Professional Work[edit]

Apurba Dutta worked as a banker at a nationalized Bank in Kolkata since 1972. He was highly regarded as an employee and climbed the ladder of success rapidly and with ease. However, after serving 30 glorious years in a leading Nationalized Bank, his insuppressible passion in authoring compelled him to take voluntary early retirement from work and ever since he immersed into literature creation full time until the last day of his life.

In later years the flow was conjoined by his life-partner, following his marriage in 1975 with Kaberi (Das), who unarguably possesses an immense love for literature and a strong personality embellished with a commendable sense of judgment.

Cause of Death[edit]

Apurba Dutta passed away on October 5th, 2016 after suffering a massive heart attack.
