The Arab Poetry Academy is a cultural institution dedicated to enriching and promoting all aspects of Arabic poetry. It is based in the city of Taif, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The academy was established in August 2016 and is chaired by the poet Prince Khalid Al-Faisal. Each year, the academy awards a total of one million Saudi riyals in prizes to outstanding Arab poets across various poetic forms through the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Award for Arabic Poetry.[1]

Objectives of the Academy

Through its activities, the Arab Poetry Academy aims to support and publish studies on both classical and contemporary Arabic poetry, nurture and develop poetic and critical talents, and support Arab poets and critics while honoring outstanding contributors among them. The academy also organizes conferences, forums, seminars, and lectures specializing in Arabic poetry, issues annual reports on the current state of Arabic poetry, and contributes to everything that helps promote and scientifically document poetic culture.[2]

Headquarters of the Academy

The academy is located in the courtyard of the historic King Saud Palace in Taif, covering an area of 3,136 square meters. It features halls for hosting lectures, seminars, poetry and literary critique evenings, literary dialogues, and specialized workshops. In addition, it houses a visual and audio library containing a collection of Arabic poetic works.[3]

Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Award for Arabic Poetry

This is an international award granted to Arab poets to encourage and nurture poetic creativity. It comprises three categories: Arabic poetry, with a prize of 500,000 SAR; Arabic poetic drama, with a prize of 300,000 SAR; and sung poetry, with a prize of 200,000 SAR. The winners are announced on March 21, which coincides with World Poetry Day.[4]
