Arabesque Asset Management (or Arabesque) is an Anglo-German investment management firm founded by Omar Selim in May 2013. It is a UK-authorised investment manager, with offices in London and Frankfurt am Main. The company's trading decisions combine quantitative models based on proprietary research with sustainability criteria.[1]

History

Arabesque was developed by the investment banking division of Barclays Bank plc in the UK, Germany and the GCC. In May 2013, Arabesque was spun out of Barclays as part of a management buy out led by Omar Selim.[1]

Organisation

Arabesque's headquarters are in London, where the firm is regulated by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority.[2] Arabesque also has a research centre in Frankfurt am Main, which specialises in both values-based research and quantitative research, and partners in the U.S.[3]

The company has 18 members of staff. The CEO is Omar Selim, former head of Global Markets for institutional clients in EMEA at Barclays Bank.[4] The Chief Investment Officer is Anja Mikus.[3] The firm has an advisory board made up of academics and industry professionals from the fields of sustainable investing and quantitative mathematics[3] including Professor Gordon Clark, director of Oxford University's Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment.[5]

Investment Strategy

Sustainability

Since its inception, Arabesque has been focused on developing investments that are in line with the United Nations' Principles for Responsible Investment, the United Nations' Global Compact, and the AAOIFI standards (balance sheet and business involvement screening).[6][4] The company affirms that there is a demonstrable correlation between companies’ environmental, social and governance (ESG) scores and financial outperformance; Arabesque’s investment approach combines this ESG information with fundamental analysis and portfolio management technology.[4] Arabesque is a signatory to the United Nations' Global Compact,[7] and to the Japanese Stewardship Code Principles for Responsible Institutional Investors.[8]

Systematic

Arabesque uses research and quantitative data analysis to identify optimal investment compositions within a sustainable investment universe.[1]
