Arbour Square police station was a police station at Arbour Square, Stepney, on the junction of East Arbour and Aylward Street. Built alongside it in the 1970's was Thames Magistrates Court.
Arbour Square was opened in 1923. It was built as the headquarters of 'H' division of the Metropolitan Police Service, station-code 'HD' (the letter D depicting it to be a divisional headquarters) covering the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney. It suffered bomb damage during the blitz in 1944[1]
On Leman Street Police Station opening in 1970 and being designated as divisional headquarters, it was redesignated 'HA'.
Following the opening of Bethnal Green Police Station in 1993 (and the subsequent alignment of MPS police divisions to local authority boundaries, leading to many divisions merging), the front desk closed in 1999[2]. The Court also closed, with high-profile cases being heard at Woolwich Crown Court instead. Famed for housing IRA terrorists and the Kray Twins in its custody block, it was disposed of by the Metropolitan Police in 2003 and subsequently squatted and vandalised before being sold to a private developer in 2012 [3] [4].
