The Arcato Quartet is a Germann string quartet founded in Leipzig in 1999.

History[edit]

The origin of the quartet goes back to the MDR Symphony Orchestra, in which all founding members played. The aim was to gain experience in chamber music in addition to playing in the orchestra. The members studied at the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig and Dresden with Gerhard Bosse, Hiltrud Ilg, Uta Vincze and Wolfgang Weber. With Eva Heinig, who is a violinist in the orchestra of the Halle Opera House, the quartet reaches beyond Leipzig.

Repertoire[edit]

The quartet's focus is on the classical and romantic works of their genre, such as those by Mozart, Borodin, Janáček and Shostakovich. In addition, however, the quartet also takes care of pieces by rather unknown composers, such as Sulchan Fjodorowitsch Zinzadse, of whose fourth string quartet a radio recording was made for Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk.[1]

Performances[edit]

The Arcato Quartet regularly performs, among other things, in the MDR Symphony Orchestra's "Rathauskonzert" series at the Altes Rathaus Leipzig (most recently in June 2009) as well as in the Gohliser Schlösschen[2] such as for the 104th "Gohliser Bürgerkonzert" on 24 February 2008 and in Königlichen Kurhaus in Bad Elster.[3]

Line-up[edit]

The current cast consists of:

  • Katharina Vogel, violin
  • Eva Heinig, violin (since 2005)
  • Christian Seifert, alto
  • Susanne Raßbach, violoncello
