History[edit]

The Rodin Quartet was founded in 1993 by former students of the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, and was named after the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. They have been played in the same formation from the beginning. They have frequently explored works outside the standard repertoire, such as the string quartets by Ignaz, Vinzenz and Franz Lachner, and music from Theresienstadt concentration camp including compositions by Gideon Klein, Hans Krása and Viktor Ullmann.

Since 1997, the ensemble has run its own concert series in Munich, with about five concerts a year. The series began in the Carl Orff Hall of the Gasteig, and was moved to to the Max Joseph Hall of the Munich Residence in 2000. The musicians played several cycles there such as the complete string quartets by Beethoven, all great string quartets by Mozart, the complete Schubert quartets, Schumann quartets and Mendelssohn quartets.

The quartet has played with well-known soloists such as Sharon Kam, Siegfried Palm, Hariolf Schlichtig, Eduard Brunner, Christoph Hartmann [de], Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy and Maurizio Baglini.
