ArcticStartup, a Helsinki-based media company,[2] provides news and promotional services focused on northern European startup companies. The company also organizes an annual convention for startups, Arctic15. The company was founded by Antti Vilpponen in 2007.[3]
In November 2012, Vilpponen announced the closure of the company.[4] Dmitri Sarle and Greg Anderson were given ownership of the company's assets and continued to run the blog and related events using the same name, but without the revenue earned from the old company. In 2013 the company was profitable, making €87,000. By 2015 that had grown to €264,000.[5] Its offices are located in a converted hospital in Helsinki, Finland, along with several startup companies.[6]
The ArcticStartup blog, which focuses on news about startup companies in the Nordic region,[7] receives one-fifth of its traffic from the United States and half of its traffic from Finland and other Nordic countries.[3] In 2014, the Nordic Startup Awards, an annual awards ceremony sponsored by large technological companies that focuses on startup companies in the Nordic region, named ArcticStartup blogger Greg Anderson "best start-up journalist".[8]
Convention[edit]
Arctic15 is a two day annual startup and technology conference run by ArcticStartup which was first held in 2011 in Helsinki.[9] The event, which accounts for two-thirds of ArcticStartup's revenue,[3] covers startups in northern Europe.[10] The convention's primary intent is to match startup companies with investors.[3]
Arctic15 also hosts an awards ceremony for startup companies. The top fifteen are chosen by a public vote, and the final three are then chosen by a panel of judges. The top three then go on to the finals at the Arctic15 conference, with the winner getting a grand prize of €5,000.[11]
