Arctic Dreams is a Serbian sympho-industrial-black-death-metal band, founded in 2009 in St. Petersburg, Russia by Aleksandr "ALEX_Y" Yarvinen (vocals/guitars/music/lyrics) and Igor "SYDIUS" Pokatilov (backing vocals/guitar). The band is currently based in Belgrade, Serbia.[1] The name of the project refers to Scandinavian themes such as northern winter, cold, and the polar night . For a long time the project was a studio project, but since 2020 it has resumed its activities. In 2022, members of the band relocated from Russia .
History
The project started in 2009 when Aleksandr "ALEX_Y" Yarvinen moved to St. Petersburg and met guitarist Igor "SYDIUS" Pokatilov. They found bass player Max Borin and drummer Nikita Orlov. The band started rehearsals and in January 2010 recorded a debut demo which is stylistically completely different from the current material. In the same year, Aleksandr "ALEX_Y" Yarvinen left for Finland where he started composing material for his debut album, which would be released 12 years later. A year later, returning to Russia, he continued the process of composing for the album until 2014 .
In 2014, the band finally started recording their debut album. The rhythm section was recorded quickly, but after that, a long process of searching for the band's sound began, which led to Aleksandr "ALEX_Y" Yarvinen founding his own studio and label. Work on the album continued until 2022, almost eight years in total, and after this long silence the band released four records in a single year. In the same year, the band left Russia, Igor "SYDIUS" Pokatilov moved to Berlin, and Aleksandr "ALEX_Y" Yarvinen to Belgrade where the band became based and continued its activities.
With the move outside Russia, a new chapter in the band's history began. In early 2023, a guitarist and composer Nenad Krpešić joined the band. In June of that same year, Gennady Zhupakhin joined the band and assumed bass guitar duties. At this stage, Marko Mitrović assisted with the drums, and with this lineup, the band began rehearsals and preparations for recording their second album. In the spring of 2024, it became clear that Marko Mitrović would not be able to continue working with Arctic Dreams and that Roman "ASKET" Dubrovin would replace him.
In the spring of 2025, Arctic Dreams began their concert activities after a long hiatus. Their first two concerts were "Obsidian Legacy" in Belgrade and "Ravens over Niš" in Niš .[2] For personal reasons, guitarist Igor "Sydius" Pokatilov did not participate in these concerts, and it was jointly decided that he would not continue his work with the project. After these two events, guitarist Nenad Krpešić decided to leave the band. Gennady Zhupakhin took up the guitar. In May 2025, Mirko "Deathlord" Vidojević took over the vacant bass guitar position, and in June of the same year, Ivan Kleiner joined the band. With its new lineup, the band played at the local festival "I vukovi idu na zov punog meseca", which took place at the Zemun ClubFest on July 26, 2025 [3] . On September 4, 2025, Arctic Dreams performed at the Hellhammer Festival Echoes after-show, sharing the stage with such legends as Terrorhammer and Hate .[4][5]
As of September 2025, the band was working on their second full-length album.
Style
The band's musical style has its origins in symphonic black metal, although the first demos came out in the style of gothic-industrial metal inspired by such bands as Deathstars and Dope Stars Inc.. For eight years of painstaking work in the studio, the style has transformed into something unique, including a variety of styles of metal, into what the project members themselves call 'arctic dreams metal'. In the musical material, the influence of completely different performers can be heard, ranging from classical composers such as Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, and ending with representatives of cyber-gothic and Dark electro Hocico, Diary of Dreams, Die Sektor, and Nurzery. The band's music was also influenced by a wide variety of styles: gothic metal Type O Negative, Tiamat, Atrocity, Death metal Death, Cynic, Melodic death metal In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates industrial metal Rammstein, Pain, heavy metal Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, thrash metal Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Kreator, Norwegian black-metal Burzum, Mayhem, Satyricon, Darkthrone, Immortal, symphonic black metal Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Power metal Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, doom metal Therion, Crematory, and many others.
