Arie Hanggara (21 December 1977 – 8 November 1984) was a child who died after being abused by his father Machtino and his stepmother Santi in 1984. Arie Hanggara's case became significant due to the great attention of the mass media, which brought the tragedy to light.[1]

Until now, the Arie Hanggara case is still often brought up and used as a reference by the Indonesian mass media, especially when similar cases occur where a child becomes a victim of violence and is declared K.O. (knockout) by their own parents. The public’s interest was so great that the case was made into a film, Arie Hanggara, which was produced by PT Tobali Indah Film in 1985, and was quite successful in marketing.

Biography

Arie Hanggara was born as the second child of Machtino Eddiwan and Dahlia Nasution. But when their household became chaotic, Arie and his two brothers were brought by his father to live with his mistress named Santi.[2]

Santi is often rumored to be Arie and his siblings’ stepmother, even though Machtino and Santi had not officially become husband and wife in the April 13, 1985 edition of Tempo. People who regard Santi as their stepmother will make the status of "stepmother" a nightmare for their children.

Arie attended Cikini College, Central Jakarta. His father was unemployed after his business went bankrupt and Santi worked in an office. Arie is known to be sociable and cheerful with his friends at school according to his teacher, Khadidjah; while Santi and his father regarded Arie as a naughty child. They found Arie stealing money several times.

Punishment

Annoyed by Arie's actions, his father and Santi often tortured him. Arie was abused by his father and stepmother, such as being beaten, kicked, slapped, knocked out, told to squat and stand continuously until he was exhausted, banging his head against the wall, and being locked up in the bathroom.

Although Arie often received such treatment, according to Khadidjah, Arie did not show signs of mental stress. If the wound on his body was discovered by the teacher, he replied it was because of a fall, and other reasons.[3]

Death

November 8, 1984 was the last day of Arie's life. After being tortured from day to night, at night he was made to face the wall, his head was banged against the wall, he was not allowed to eat and drink, and he was locked up in the bathroom.

Arie, who was 6 years old at the time, was forced into the bathroom. After a few hours, Arie finally passed out in the bathroom without realizing it. His father, who felt that Arie's punishment was enough, opened the bathroom door and found his son had passed out and was dying with a bloody head and declared K.O. (knockout). Arie was rushed to the hospital and died on the way.[4]

Wound

Arie's body was covered in about 40 wounds that spread almost all over his body, namely:

  • on the back
  • on the waist
  • on the buttocks
  • in the chest
  • on the neck

serious injuries that spread to both arms and elsewhere.

Burial

Arie Hanggara is buried at the Jeruk Purut Cemetery, South Jakarta. On the right and left side of the tombstone, there are the words "Sorry Papa" and "Sorry Mama".

Court

After undergoing the trial process, the verdict was finally handed down. Machtino Eddiwan, Arie's father, was sentenced to 5 years in prison by the South Jakarta District Court. Meanwhile, Santi was sentenced to 2 years in prison. Santi's sentence was lighter because she was considered only to have helped Machtino Eddiwan in carrying out the persecution.
