On January 27, 2023, a 19-year old gave birth to a male infant in the bathroom of Artesia General Hospital in Artesia, New Mexico. The infant was later found in the bathroom's trash can, wrapped in the bag, and the baby was determined to have died due to homicide by suffocation. The killing has gained significant public interest and media attention.

The accused was arrested on May 10, 2023, and was charged with the first-degree murder of her baby, and tampering with evidence. If convicted of first-degree murder, she faces life in prison.

Incident[edit]

In the early hours of January 27, 2023, the mother of the 19-year old drove them to Artesia General Hospital after the suspect had complained about back pain. Following a positive pregnancy test in the emergency room, she vehemently denied the results of it and said it was impossible after claiming she had never had sexual intercourse. Around 1:38 a.m., she went to the hospital's bathroom, which she spent around 18 minutes in. After she returned to the hospital room, a nurse informed them that the hospital staff had found a dead baby in the bathroom, and that the bathroom was covered in blood. She claimed that she had given birth to male infant in the bathroom and that he showed no signs of life such as crying, which was later disputed in the autopsy report. Since she had given birth and had experienced blood loss, she was flown by helicopter to Lovelace Medical Center in Roswell, New Mexico. The deceased male infant was sent away for autopsy.[1][2][3][4]

Legal proceedings[edit]

The male infant, legally referred to as "Baby John Doe" was determined to have died due to homicide caused by a lack of oxygen. On May 10, 2023, the suspect was arrested at her home, and charged with first-degree murder "or alternatively" intentional child abuse resulting in death, and tampering with evidence. She was later released on $100,000 bail. She was allowed to attend school and graduate, though was ordered by the judge to attend counseling. She will not be required to wear an ankle monitor or be under house arrest, and her trial is scheduled for October 2, 2023.[1][5]
