Biography[edit]
Early Life[edit]
Lipsky was born in Haifa, Israel where he received extensive training as a cellist and as a flutist. At the age of nine, Lipsky won the first of many prestigious musical competitions allowing him to perform as a soloist with the Haifa Symphony. After this success as a soloist, he began to appear in performances across Europe and Israel eventually leading to his serious study of composition and conducting. His mentors include Semyon Bychkov, Yoel Levi and Kurt Masur in conducting and Pablo Casals and Leonard Rose on cello. He holds undergraduate degrees in aeronautical engineering and music which he received before serving in the Israeli Defense Forces. After serving in the Yom Kippur War, Lipsky emigrated to the United States in 1980 and returned to music, receiving a masters degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music.[3][4]
Career[edit]
Lipsky moved to Buffalo, NY in 1984 to become the Buffalo Philharmonic’s principal cellist, a position he would hold for 17 years. During this time he would perform under the baton of Julius Rudel and Semyon Bychkov. In 1990, he became the Resident Conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic. In early 1995, on short notice, Lipsky replaced the late Eduardo Mata conducting the Israel Chamber Orchestra, where his success resulted in return engagements with many of Israel’s orchestras. Lipsky also conducted the Arthur Rubinstein Orchestra in Lódź, Poland as well as touring and recording as cellist for the New Arts Trio.[3]
In 2000, Lipsky was hired as the music director and conductor of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. While commuting from Buffalo, NY, Lipsky also began as the music director of the Ashland Symphony, the chair of the chamber music program at the Chautauqua Institution School of Music, as well as conducting other major orchestras in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Israel.
In 2009, Lipsky and the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra released an album on Naxos Records featuring the music of American composer, Paul Fetler.[5][6] Included on the recording are Fetler's Violin Concerto No. 2 performed by Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster, Aaron Berofsky.[7]
Lipsky was named the principal guest conductor of the Haifa Symphony Orchestra[8] in 2013. Shortly after, he and his family relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan permanently in order to continue his tenure with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra while traveling to Israel throughout the year.[9]
Lipsky's tenure with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra included strong educational initiatives including family concerts and side-by-side programs combining youth orchestras with professional musicians. In November 2017, Arie and the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra were honored with the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor’s Distinguished Service Award for extraordinary service to the greater Ann Arbor community through the presentation of uplifting music and educational concert programming for school children. Arie resigned from the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra in June 2019 and from the Ashland Symphony in August 2019.[10]
Personal Life[edit]
Lipsky resides in Ann Arbor, MI[11] with his wife, Rachel, and their daughter, Inbal.
