Arif Mehmood Alam (Urdu: کرنل عارف محمود عالم ; 1965 – 19 May 2011) was a Pakistan Army officer[1] as a Colonel in the Frontier Works Organization who received Tamgha-e-Basalat.[1] He was Commander of Attabad Lake Project from Frontier Works Organization.[2]
Early life
Mehmood Alam was born on 10 March 1965 in a Rajput family in the village of Chakwal, and received his early education there.
He passed his matriculation from Military College Jhelum and FA, BA examinations from Government College Chakwal.[3]
Military career
Alam obtained his commission in the Corps of Engineering on 13th April 1987. He joined Pakistan army as a Captain. After that, he served in the country, which led to his becoming a lieutenant colonel.[4]
In 2005, he served as Commanding Officer of the Restoration Project at the landslide site in Hattian Bala after the 2005 Kashmir earthquake.[5]
In 2010 Arif was promoted from Lieutenant colonel to the rank of Colonel.[6]
In October 2010, he was appointed by Pakistan Army as Commanding Officer of Attabad Lake Project.[1]
Death
On 19 May 2011, Colonel Arif Mehmood gave his life in an attempt to save the lives of his soldiers during a rescue operation at Lake Attabad, Hunza.[7][8]
