Arno H. Fried
Dr. Arno H. Fried is among a small group of neurosurgeons in the United States to be board certified in both general neurosurgery and pediatric neurosurgery..[1].
He and his team, who form Advanced Neurosurgery Associates, were one of the first in the region to utilize minimally invasive techniques in neurosurgery[2]. They have successfully applied these techniques to treat hydrocephalus, brain cysts, brain tumors and craniosynostosis using an intracranial endoscope. They have also applied new surgical techniques for many children with epilepsy, spina bifida and tethered cord syndrome.
Dr. Fried has received several awards and honors in the field of neurosurgery, including AANS Fellow and ACS Fellow.
Biography[edit]
After completing medical school, Dr. Fried began his career at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He later served as the Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic. Today he is based in New Jersey, where for many years he has served as Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at several hospitals in the area[3].
Dr Arno Fried was behind the hydrocephalus brain neurosurgery of Giana DiLascio, a teenage girl who shone light on her illness when she caught the attention of Justin Timberlake on a media press tour[4]. The singer stopped to talk with Giana about her illness, after which numerous press outlets contacted Giana and gave her a rare opportunity to talk about a disease that affects 1 to 2 in 1,000 children in the US[5].
Dr. Arno Fried was also involved in what ABC called one of four 'living miracles' related to gunshot head wound survivors.[6] Three-year old Stephanie Ayula was shot in the head while attending a family wedding in Nigeria in 2005. Her parents airlifted her home to the Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, where Dr Arno Fried removed bullet and skull fragments, as well as controlled brain swelling. Today her brain is completely normal in terms of neurological function, although Stephanie has required several more surgeries to fix the bone around her eye and reconstruct a skull to protect her growing brain.
Education[edit]
Dr. Fried has practiced neurosurgery for more than three decades. He completed medical school in 1978 at Meharry Medical College, followed with residencies and fellowships at several institutions, notably Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia[7].

Dr. Arno Fried founded what has become the largest adult and pediatric neurosurgery practice in New Jersey. Since its foundation, Advanced Neurosurgery Associates has grown to include physicians Dr. Mostafa El Khashab, Dr. Allison M. Rathmann, and Dr. Vivek Ramakrishnan[8]
