Around The World In Seven Minutes And Four Times On Saturday is a British television documentary produced by Robert Sidaway[1] and made as an independent production acquired for transmission by the BBC.

It tells the general history of the Pathé News and Movietone News cinema newsreels in the United Kingdom and is centered round an interview with their lead commentators Bob Danvers-Walker and Leslie Mitchell, in which they recall the rivalry between the companies and the rise and fall of their popularity. Utilizing numerous clips, the documentary also stressed the cultural significance of the newsreel.

The interview was conducted by Su Ingle.[2]

First broadcast on BBC2 on 31 December 1985 at 15:45,[3] it was repeated on the same channel on 23 August 1986 at 18:10.[4]

The documentary was Leslie Mitchell's last appearance before his death in November.

Structure[edit]

The documentary begins with a brief history of cinema newsreels, from their early days in the 1900s to their decline in the 1960s. It then focuses on the two most famous British cinema newsreels, Pathé News and Movietone News. Pathé News was founded in 1910 and was the first British newsreel to be produced on a weekly basis. Movietone News was founded in 1929 and was the first British newsreel to be produced in sound.

The documentary then profiles the two lead commentators for Pathé and Movietone newsreels, Bob Danvers-Walker and Leslie Mitchell. Danvers-Walker was the lead commentator for Pathé News from 1935 to 1963. He was known for his smooth, authoritative voice and his ability to make complex news stories easy to understand. Mitchell was the lead commentator for Movietone News from 1933 to 1963. He was known for his wit and his ability to inject humor into even the most serious news stories.

The documentary concludes with a look at the legacy of cinema newsreels and the important role it played in shaping British public opinion and understanding of the world in the 20th century. It also argues that cinema newsreels are an important part of British cultural history.
