Art-abstract was an artist group of mainly Amsterdam members which started around 2002; the artists wanted to search together for new ways and meanings for abstract art.[1]

Start of Art-abstract[edit]

Late in 2002 Fons Heijnsbroek and Daan Lemaire took the initiative to found the artist group Árt-abstract as a way of exchanging ideas together about what abstract art still could mean for the present time. From 2003 group exhibitions were organized by Art-abstract, as a way to communicate these ideas about contemporary abstract art with the public. At the end of 2002 Art-abstract group was formally founded. In Spring of 2003 the first group exhibition 'Actuele Kunst' was announced. The affiliated members presented their works for the first time together in the art gallery 'Dokzaal' of Plantage Dok in Amsterdam.[1] The participating artists were: Harry Agema,[2] paintings – Els Bannenberg, paintings - Hilly van Eerten,[3] graphic art - Fons Heijnsbroek,[4] paintings - Daan Lemaire,[5] glass sculpture + painting - Gerben van der Meer, paintings - Mirjam de Nijs,[6] statues in stone - Susan Ohler,[7] paintings - Ben Vollers, paintings.

In May 2003 the Dutch online art magazine Kunstwereld aptly characterized the start of Art-abstract as an expression of renewed interest and revival of abstract art in the Netherlands:

'The many manifestations of abstract art [in The Netherlands] can be found in a recently established group of artists under the name Art-abstract.. ..This week there is a first joint exhibition. Art-abstract wants to give a face to current abstract art. What is abstract art currently involved in? What questions and answers does she know, and what does she look like today?.. ..The founding of Art Abstract corresponds to the determination of the creators of the exhibition 'Abstraction around Dordrecht' (incl. a publication by the Dordrechts Museum edited by Nicoline Wijnja, 2003) )[8] that there is a revival when it comes to abstract art, after a subordinate position in previous decades. People find it remarkable that at this moment (2003) artists are once again using this visual language.'[9]

Course of the group[edit]

In 2004 the artists Vincent van Oss and Harry Versteegen[10] started to join the group. In the meantime, hard work was done on Art-abstract's own website. Here were placed images of selections of abstract works, announcements of new plans and exhibitions and extensive articles about the individual approach, style and development of the affiliated artists. The group was a mainly Amsterdam artist group with only a few members outside the city; so in practice there were mainly local exhibitions within the Amsterdam region. At the height of Art-abstract, 10 artists were connected, participating until 2007 in group exhibitions. They exchanged frequently their ideas about abstract art and its contemporary role. They discussed their recent art-works and gave mutually comments. Around 2007/08 many artists left the group. From then on no longer activities were done; only the website continued in a reduced form by 3 remaining artists: Harry Versteegen, Vincent van Oss and Els Bannenberg.[11]
