Art Beins,is a 10th Dan[1] and an award winning,[2]

Art Beins

Beins has been studying and teaching Karate for over 45 years. He has been training students since opening his first school in 1980.[2] Beins began his training in Karate under the tutelage of the founder of Black Cat Kenpo Karate, Raymond Gay, 10th Dan.[1]

In 1996 he was voted “Instructor of the Year” by the International Martial Arts Association[2] and in 2006 his school[1] was voted “National Karate School of the Year” by Action Martial Arts Magazine’s Hall of Fame. His expertise as a teacher was acknowledged when he was chosen as an assistant coach for team USA in 1997.[3] Beins has been inducted into 7 different Martial Arts and Wrestling Halls of Fame.[2] By the age of 13, Beins realized he needed an outlet both mentally and physically. With his father’s help he began studying karate under the tutelage of Raymond Gay. During his High School and College career, he was also a renowned wrestler. Beins was High School wrestling runner up in the 1972 State Championships in the 157 lb. division.[4] When he competed for Monmouth College (Middlesex County College), he won the 1973 NJ State College Championship in the 158 lb. division.

In 1980 with the help of family and friends he opened his first Karate school in Howell N.J.[2] Based upon his training with Gay, he taught a form of Karate known as “Black Cat Kenpo” Since that time, he has become the president of the United States Black Cat Kenpo Karate Federation.[1] He has seven affiliated schools in New Jersey, New York, and Florida owning 2 of them. During this time, his schools have trained over 10,000 students while awarding 447 Black belts.[1]

Wanting to reach a larger audience with his instruction and philosophies, Beins produced and hosted a popular weekly cable television show “KARATE & YOU”.[5] This series aired for 8 years on Monmouth Cable in New Jersey from 1989-1997. Karate & You aired 2 times a week making it the longest running martial arts instructional program in the country. KARATE & YOU was not designed solely to promote United States Black Cat Kenpo Karate, but to promote all styles of the Martial Arts. In 2009 Beins produced an Instructional program, “THE BLACK BELT SUCCESS LIBRARY with approximately 8 1/2 hours of instruction. It provides the viewer with the necessary requirements to progress from White belt to Black belt in this system. This program comes with a handbook that will help optimize practice sessions at home.

Along with his instructors and students at Art Beins Karate, he promotes and participates in many charitable events and Karate tournaments.[2] He finds that these events not only raise money but help to inspire people looking for the same outlet that he found many years ago. To date, his efforts have raised over $200,000 for many worthy causes. In acknowledgement of his efforts, both Mayors of Jackson and Howell NJ. Proclaimed “Master Art Beins Week” in 2010.[2]

Through his history as a high school wrestler, karate schools and his work in the community, Beins has been recognized as a positive role model. He has become a local icon as shown by being profiled in a book about the community; titled “Images of America: Howell and Farmingdale.” by Arcadia publishing.
