Biograph[edit]
Young age[edit]
As a human,Arthas was birthed in four years before The First War,his father was the king Terenas Menethil, mother was the Queen Lianne Menethil.
In his childhood, the dark of the war between the orcish horde and the human kingdom was always covering the horizon.
As a child,he became a best friend of Varian Wryan, the future king of The kingdom of Stormwind, and grew up with his future steed,Invincible. As a youth, the king of the dwarf kingdom,Muradin Bronzebeard's brother Magni Bronzebeard taught him the skill of combat,he became to a skilled swordman. In meanwhile,He was also learned The Light under the lead of his mentor,Uther the Lightbringer.Sometimes later, his father arranged a political marriage for his sister Calia.Calia was worried about the marriage, but she told Arthas to marry for love, not for politics.
Arthas was formly to be a member of the Knights of the Silver Hand in 19 age,the ceremony was held in Stormwind City. Many outstanding figures was attended the ceremony.Archbishop Alonsus Faol led the initiation process, and Gavinrad sent Arthas a warhammer——the Light's Vengeance.
In Stormwind City,Arthas visited new king Varian Wrynn,he was also met the just recently born prince,Anduin.Arthas was once visited Durnholde Keep,he saw the famous orc gladitor Thrall in there.Later, because of a accident, his steed,Invincible suffered a very heavy wound,Arthas was forced to kill his horse to stop its pain.
Arthas was visited Dalaran once so he can spend time with Jaina Proudmoore.During the visit time,Antonidas organised a feast for him and Kael'thas Sunstrider, who was also fond of Jaina.Going with the time,Arthas and Jaina became lovers from just being friends. In pace with the development of their relationship, they were planned the marriage,at Hallow's End,Jaina used a fire spell to burnt the wickerman to the crowd's delight, she and Arthas retreated to the prince's rooms and they had sex for the first time[2].But finally,Arthas suspected the future of their relationship,he was thought they are not ready to the marriage,so he ended relationship love suddenly.
Not long after, they fell in love again, but the invasion of Scourge thoroughly changed them.
In that period,Arthas was considered one of the best swordsman in Lordaeron, his most famous battle was defeated the forest troll warband in Zul'Aman.
Plague[edit]
A few years later,a mysterious plague enguled the northern Lordaeron, orcs escaped from internment camps,Arthas and Uther came to Strahnbrad to defend to orcish raids.Although the young prince defeated all attacks, but the threat of plague was still expanding,Jaina and Captain Falric came to help Arthas to investigate the plague. In a diseased garner, they fought with a undead troop, then they encountered the necromancer Kel'Thuzad in the town of Brill and chased him to Andorhal.Arthas killed him, before he died,Kel'Thuzad mentioned Mal'Ganis,a demon who led the Scourge troop.
Although Kel'Thuzad has been killed, but he had already infected the garners in Andorhal, and the cereals has been transported to other villages.Jaina and Arthas going to Stratholme.
Stratholme[edit]
When they finally arrived Stratholme, the infected cereals had already distributed. He knew the people of Stratholme will become undead, turned to attack them.He ordered Uther and his knights "culling" the entire city, but Uther refused him.
"You are not my king yet, boy. Nor would I obey that command if you were!"
— Uther,refusing Arthas' order
Then,Arthas declared Uther betrayed the country,Arthas relieved his position in the Order of the Silver Hand and suspended his paladins from service. But Jaina was disagreed Arthas' method too, then they left Startholme, only Arthas and those who still loyal to Arthas did the culling.
"I'm sorry Arthas, I can't watch you do this"
— Jaina
At the end of the culling,Arthas found Mal'Ganis, who was reaping the souls of Stratholme citizens, although Arthas successfully killed all infected Stratholme citizen before the latter succeeded.Arthas demanded a final fight to dreadlord, but Mal'Ganis was just told Arthas they will meet in Northrend.
Northrend[edit]
Arthas followed Mal'Ganis closerly, one month later, his troop landed in Daggercap Bay in central Howling Fjord. When they were finding a fit place to pitch camp,Arthas met his good friend and former mentor,Muradin Bronzebeard.Muradin told Arthas, his target was to search the runeblade Frostmourne. Then they destroyed some campsites of undeads near there, but no messages about Mal'Ganis.
During they searching Frostmourne,a messenger arrived in a zepplin from Lordaeron. He brought an order from Uther and King Terenas, which demand Arthas and his troops come back right now. When Arthas returned to his base,he found his base has been abandoned, his troops are ready to through forests to their ships. However,Arthas just wanted to destroy the dreadlord,so he burnt the ships with the help of local frost trolls. When his men arrived,Arthas told his troops the ships were destroyed by the trolls, and he ordered the captain to kill them all.Muradin was disgusted by this behavior.Arthas told his men,the only way they could leave Northrend is victory.
Frostmourne[edit]
Arthas and his men marched to Draktharon Keep to search Frostmourne, when he arrived,Mal'Ganis appeared and foretold his death.Arthas decided to search blade with Muradin, and leave his captain defend the camp.
Using an old waygate,Arthas,Muradin and his men arrived the near of the runeblade,The Guardian tried to stop Arthas from the blade, apparently for its own protection. But Arthas defeated it.Arthas and Muradin got their things.
However,According to the inscripution,he found the blade was cursed,so he requested Arthas to forget the desire for revenge and bring his men back home. But Arthas' mind was decided,he asked the spirits of the cave for the sword release it from its icy prison. When the weapon refree,Muradin was struck by ice shards, lost his conscious.Arthas was moving to help Muradin, but the summon of Frostmourne in his mind stopped him.He threw his hammer, the Light's Vengeance, picked up the runeblade and returned to his base, leaving Muradin alone.
“Nothing shall prevent me from having my revenge, old friend. Not even you. Now, I call out to the spirits of this place. I will give anything, or pay any price, if only you will help me save my people.”
— Arthas·Menethil
With Frostmourne,Arthas defeated armies of Mal'Ganis,in the finally fight with the dreadlord,Mal'Ganis told Arthas, the voice in his mind was came from the Lich King, while Arthas' respond surprised it,he told Mal'Ganis that, the voice was instructing him to destroy Mal'Ganis.
After Mal'Ganis died,Arthas fled to froste north, leaving his troops in Northrend.Soon later,he lost his last sanity.[3]
Although Arthas achieved his victory, but he had sold his soul to the Lich King. Thus the Lich King gained his most powerful servant ever.Arthas became the first death night of the Lich King.[3]
Betaryal[edit]
After Arthas became the first death knight,he was given a suit of a Saronite armor, and killed many of his own men, some of them were raised as death knight to fight for Arthas.
Some months later,Arthas returned to Lordaeron, and whole kingdom enthusiastically welcomed their hero.Arthas entered the chamber to met his father. After telling his father that he no longer need that crown,Arthas stabbed him with Frostmourne in his heart. After moaning in pain for a while,King Terenas died.
Soon afterwards,Arthas dispatched Scourge army occupied the capital,he found Vivian soon, wife of a fallen hero Killoren,Arthas ordered Thassarian to kill Vivian, his mother,to prove his loyalty.
Arthas remained Farlic and Marwyn watch the city,he was go to the Balnir Farmstead,in there,he rebirthed his dead steed,Invincible.
A few days later,Arthas appeared in Vandermar Village under his master's guide. He met a dreadlord Tichodrius in there.Arthas was thought it was Mal'Ganis rebirthed, but Tichodrius was congratulated to his efforts.Arthas said he will not felt regret for his actions, and Tichodrius explained the sword will steal the soul of the holder,so Arthas had been the first one.
Tichoudrius brought new order from Ner'Zhul,to revive Kel'Thuzad. So Arthas assembled the members of the Cult of the Damned in Vandermar Village.By their magical ability,he traveled to Andorhal, where Kel'Thuzad's body buried. He killed the guardian, put his soul fed to Frostmourne. After he found kel'Thuzad's remain, this necromancer's soul secretly told Arthas, don't trust the dreadlords.
Because Kel'Thuzad's remain was strongly damaged, only the spring of the Sunwell in Quel'Thalas has the ability.Tichodrius demanded Arthas to find a magical urn to keep the remains, but the urn was keeping by the knights of the Silver Hand.In the fight,Arthas killed two paladins ,Ballador the Bright and Sage Truthbearer, they were both condemned his betrayal. Then he faced Uther,Uther claimed the urn held his father's ashes, but he was also killed by Arthas, before Uther died,he told Arthas that,he hoped there was a special place in hell waiting for him.Arthas answered that they may never know because he intended to live forever, then he threw the ashes of his father,in stead of Kel'Thuzad's,then he started the way to Quel'Thalas.
Quel'Thalas[edit]
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner and her rangers were the defend power of the capital of Quel'Thalas,Silvermoon. When Arthas and his Spouse legion arrived on the doorstep of Quel'Thala,Kelmarin, one of Sylvanas' scouts immidiately told her the information.Sylvanas organaised her farstriders, and went to observe the enemies.
She came to met Arthas and suggested the death knight turn back. However,Arthas retorted that death itself had come to Quel'Thalas, and began his attack.Despite the Farstriders' did their best,Sylvanas tried to warn the vast elven capital the coming of the Scourge, but Arthas destroyed her camps and killed the Ranger-General.To make her pay for her insolence,Arthas corrupted her spirit, transformed her into a banshee and enslaving her will to ordering her kill her people.
After Arthas and his spouse legion ruined Silvermoon,Arthas fought with the king of Quel'Thalas Anasterian Sunstrider on the road to the Sunwell,he easily killed the old king. Then he revived Kel'Thuzad as an undead lich.[4]
Daralan[edit]
On the way to Althrac,Kel'Thuzad explained the full extent of the "second invasion" and the plan of the Lich King Kel'Thuzad to destroy a swarm of Blackrock clan orcs, who control the demon gate,so it can communicate to the demon lord Archimonde. After they archieved their target,Archimonde told Kel'Thuzad, they will go to Dalaran to acquire the spellbook of Medivh,so Kel'Thuzad can summon Archimonde into Azeroth.
Although the mages in Dalaran used vastest power to defend, but spouse legion broken their defense in the Siege of Dalaran.Arthas acquired The book of Medivh.
After a long process summon,Archimonde arrived,he proclaimed that the Lich King was no worth to use to the legion.Tichondrius was placed in command of the Scourge.Kel'Thuzad told Arthas that,it was foresaw those things, they disappeared when Archimonde destroying Dalaran.
Some months after, under the order of the Lich King,Arthas appeared in Kalimdor,he noticed Tichodrius was using the Skull of Gul'dan to create Felwood and corrupt the surrounding forest.Arthas thought he couldn't directly kill Tichodrius,so he told the recently freed demon hunter,Illidan Stormrage the power of the skull.Illidan agreed his plan, and Arthas disappeared.
Sylvanas's fight back[edit]
Archimonde was arranged three dreadlords in the ruin of Lordaron to ensure the kingdom under the control, but they didn't imagined that the demon lord was defeated in the Battle of Mount Hyjal. Some months later, when Arthas returned to reclaim his throne.Under his threat, dreadlords escaped, then he called Kel'Thuzad and Sylvanas to his side. While he didn't know his power was reducing,Sylvanas was no longer under his control. She secretly met with three dreadlords, the latters told her this message,so she decided to plan her revenge.
In an ambush,Arthas escaped to the border of the city,he was saved by a group of banshees, who told him that Sylvanas sent them to see him safely away. However, when they neared a empty place in a forest,a vision from the Lich King told him he had been betrayed,Sylvanas appeared and shot him a poisonous arrow, but Kel'Thuzad chased and saved him.
Return to Northrend[edit]
But the Lich King's mental howl was pierced Arthas' mind,he must return to Northrend to stop the demonic army( in fact they are Illidan and the naga),they would trying to destroy the Frozen Throne.Arthas was immidiately prepared his fleet and sail to Northrend,he arranged Kel'Thuzad behind to oversee Lordaeron.
Three weeks later,Arthas landed the coast of Northrend, but Kael'thas led his blood elves army was waiting them for a long time. When he was fell into their siege,a large crypt lord who introduced itself as Anub'arak, former king of Azjol-Nerub saved him. Before they escaped from blood elves army,Kael'thas warned them that they would not so easily defeated, before they teleporting away.
Spider Kingdom[edit]
Arthas worried about the statement of Kael'thas, maybe Illidan will arrived the Frozen Throne before him,but Anub'arak thought not so.It adviced that they can go to the shattered kingdom of Azjol-Nerub,along the underground tunnel to reach Glacier before Illidan.Arthas had no other methods,so he agreed.
Anub'arak suggested a raid to the lair of Sapphiron,a blue dragon and servant of Malygos, and robbing the treasure. But they were not only killed the dragon,Arthas used his power to raise it into a Frost Wyrm.
When Arthas reached the gate of Azjol'Nerub,he was ambushed by dwarves, they are followers of Muradin who lost consciousness and remained in the cave.Their present leader was Muradin's second,Baelgun Flamebeard.Arthas was leaving Sapphiron outside,so he must through the attacks not only dwarfs, but also survivors of the spider kingdom.Anub'arak had an important function, its guide helped Arthas shunned many deadly traps.
When Arthas faced off against Baelgun, the dwarf warned that an evil ancient being are releasing,as Arthas and Anub'arak delved deeper, they found the faceless ones,a powerful and vicious race existed only in the legends. But Arthas and the crypt lord defeated those forgotten ones.
As they came back to the upper of the kingdom,an earthquake collapsed the passage which they were and divided them.Arthas can only through the horrible traps with his courage and wisdom, and Anub'arak was quickly closed to him. When they assembled again, the crypt lord praised the young death knight, saying it understood that why the Lich King optioned him as his champion. When they climbed out of Azjol'Nerub, the Lich King contacted Arthas again, and explained that the reason of why his power was losing.Ner'Zhul suppled power to Arthas, hope he would need them in the coming battle.
When they finally reached the surface, they were immediately faced the Illidan's force.Illidan's naga army and blood elves army fought intensely to Arthas's spouse army, with Anub'arak's help,Arthas magically activated the four Icecrown Obelisks around the glacier, arrived to the Frozen Throne. However,Illidan Stormrage was waiting for him,Arthas told him to leave Azerath and never return.
To be the Lich King[edit]
After a short but intense fight,Arthas caught a flaw and sliced open the demon hunter's chest with Frostmourne.Although Illidan tranformed to attack Arthas from the sky,but Arthas was finally defeated him.In the end,Illidan collapsed in the snow,Arthas entered the door of Icecrown.
The way was a windy and hollow chained ice way, when he was finally reached the peak, there was a icy coffin,he saw an armor frosted in there, the only voice in his mind of Nel'Zhul spoke to him:"Return the blade... complete the circle... release me from this prison!"
With a greatest shout,Arthas brought the icy prison with Frostmourne,Arthas picked up the helmet, and placed it on his head.
"Now," they spoke together, "we are one."
— The sounds of Ner'Zhul
Lich King of the Scourge[edit]
Arthas had three different souls in his body, they are Nel'Zhul, himself and a boy who visualised by his last humanity for five years, but finally,he used Frostmourne to killed his last conscience. And he also found the weakness of Nel'Zhul and destroyed his soul.At this point,Arthas became the only personality of the Lich King.
After Arthas became the Lich King,he took out his heart, because it's an organ of mortals. He revived Sindragosa as a frost wyrm in Sindragosa's Fall,as his subordinate.
War against the Lich King[edit]
Because of the invasion of the Scourge, more and more powers include the Horde, the Alliance, the Scarlet Crusade and the Knights of the Ebon Blade. In the Battle for Light's Hope Chapel, unified resistance armies defeated 10000 Scourge forces, but they had only 300 defenders.[5]
The message of victory was quicked spread to other places in Azeroth, greatly inspired the morale of the resistance.Tirion Fordring formed the Argent Crusade from the remains of the Order of the Silver Hand with the Argent Dawn as their main force to defeat the Lich King.
With the victories of the crusade,Scourge was defeated again and again, the Lich King's secondaries,Kel'Thuzad and Anub'arak were both killed by fighters. In the Battle of Angrather the Warthgate,Arthas forced to the battle field and killed the command of the orcish army Dranosh Saurfang, and raised him into undeath as Deathbringer Saurfang, the Lich King's most powerful death knight. But the result of the battle was both two sides damaged massively, because the New Plague was unleashed by the Grand Apothecary Putress.[6]
For discover the Lich King's weaknesses,Jaina Proudmoore and Sylvanas Windrunner led a strike team to marched to the Halls of Reflection,he Halls of Reflection are the private chambers of the Lich King, the only place where he lets his guard down. They have different target.Jaina wanted to know wheather her former friend and lover still alive in the body of the Lich King, while Sylvanas wanted to get revenge. They found Frostmourne in the hall,at that time,Uther's soul appeared in front of them,he told them that the runeblade had the ability to absorb the souls of victims, with the increase of the amount, the power of the sword also will be stronger. After they defeated Falric and Marwyn, the Lich King appeared to fight,Jaina and Sylvanas couldn't defeat him,so they were tried to escape and blew the snow to stopped the Lich King.
Death[edit]
In the final fight between the Lich King and the warriors led by Tirion Fordring in the Icecrown Citadel, the Lich King froze Fordring in an ice,but he still defeated by the continuous attack of warriors. However,he released the dark power from Frostmourne, the power with a mighty blow killed all warriors.Just at the moment that he raise them into undead,Fordring brought the ice and destroyed Frostmourne. The souls released from inside, the soul of Terenas rebirthed all warriors, then they helped Tirion wounded the Lich King more heavily. When Arthas' helmet out of him,he defeated fell in the last battlefield, and rurturned to himself. In his life's last time, the spirit of his father held him,Arthas asked him,"is it over?"After terenas told him no king can rule forever,Arthas died after he said that he can only see the darkness.
"At long last. No king rules forever, my son."
— Spirit of Terenas told Arthas
I see... only darkness... before me...
— last words of Arthas
Personality[edit]
Arthas was a brave, straight and impulsive man.He was an inspiring leader, always leading his men by example and leading charges against the plague. In conversations with others,he appeared smart and easy-going,but also firm.Arthas was easy to anger, and unmindly to show his vanity. It was very difficult for him to accept loss, and he always refused to admit his mistakes. He was always sought approvals from others (like his father) but he always felt underestimated. He was absolutely unacceptable to the betraying of his trust,he was required Jaina vowed never to deny him anything.
Maybe Arthas was got some humanities in his life's last time, but that's because the destruction of Frostmourne and released the gaoled souls.
Friendship[edit]
When Arthas was a human,he was a friend of Jarim Balnir, who witnessed the birth of the prince'ssteed,Invincible[7].Arthas and Varian Wrynn were also friends, sometimes they would spar together. His mentors Uther and Muradin were both his good friends.Jaina was developed a romantic relationship with Arthas from being friends, although the relationship was stopped by Arthas, but they were kept a good friendship, until the they even thought restart their romance, but the third war changed them forever.
As a death knight,Arthas seemed to enjoyed to talk with Kel'Thuzad and Anub'arak, before he started to Northrend,he told Kel'Thuzad that,You have been a loyal friend".
Subjects[edit]
When Arthas was prince,he cared a lot about his people,he often treated commoners as equals. But when he saw the damage to his people which brought by the scourge,he was driven by crazy. So once he knew that the only way to save them is to destory Mal'Ganis,he was came to Stratholme but not care cost.
letters about Arthas[edit]
One letter written by Uther Lightbringer to Mimblis Evermorne talked about Arthas.Mimblis Evermorne was a fellow paladin of Uther Lightbringer. This letter was sent in the year 24.
Mimblis, Greetings, my friend. I hope the Light finds you well. The young Arthas fills me with hope. He recently became a full paladin, and is nearly all I could hope for in a Knight of the Silver Hand. He is strong and powerful, with a devotion to his people that borders on zealousness. He's a fine paladin and will make a fine king when our beloved Terenas leaves us. Arthas has some growing to do, so I hope King Terenas will remain here for some time.
The only thing that bothers me about Arthas is that he has a disturbing quality in him. Sometimes, in training, I have seen him go a little far while sparring. He is so dedicating to winning the match that he forgets that it is only for training. He lacks control; I suppose it's a sense of ruthlessness that lies under his honorable exterior. I have full confidence that he will use this dedication to battle for his people, and I look forward to testing him. Once he really wets his sword, I can begin to teach him control. I don't want to rein his power just yet, until I can see what he's capable of.
Arthas loves his people very much. We recently visited some of the poorer villages outside of Lordaeron, giving healing to those in need. I wanted to test his healing powers, as well as see how he interacted with his people beyond the wealthy nobles in the city. He was full of pity for these people, weeping for a woman who had lost her leg in a wolf attack. After healing her pain, he set out on horseback, searching for the wolf. He slew three, bringing the pelts back to the woman to serve as her blankets. I was touched, but again, a little alarmed at his single-mindedness. She was grateful, and as we were there to serve the wounded and sick, our work was completed.
His relationship with Jaina Proudmoore is one I must watch. Lordaeron has never had a mage as a queen, but if she and Arthas wed, that's what we will be faced with. Perhaps it will be a good union of magic and politics, or at least bring the mages and paladins closer together. I will watch them carefully. A good thing about Jaina is that she will soften his hard edges. While she attacks her obstacles with a firm and unyielding mind, she is more diplomatic and cerebral in her approach, while Arthas may simply hammer on something until it disintegrates. They will make a strong union: he is the naked steel of a sword, and she is a fist in a velvet glove. I have confidence that they will receive public support, and I will lend them my support as well. I watch Arthas training on the field, and feel he can take on anything. He attacks with a single-mindedness that I know he will apply toward anything in life, be it physical confrontations or political. King Terenas has a good son. I have total confidence in Arthas. Yes, he has more to learn, but don't we all? He'll overcome his weaknesses and become a wise king, in time.
Looking forward to our trip to Stratholme,
— Uther
Another letter was Arthas written to Magni Brozenbeard
To King Magni Bronzebeard, Lord of Ironforge,
It is my sad duty to bring you very grim news. I am certain you know of Muradin's mission here in Northrend to strike at the Scourge and discover useful artifacts. We fought together against the Scourge, and although I survived, Muradin fell to the undead and demons. I grieve for my brave friend and your valiant brother. Yet know that his heroic death was not in vain, for his life ensured my victory against the Lich King's minions — and my recovery of the ancient sword known as Frostmourne. I shall be returning to Lordaeron soon. With Frostmourne in hand, I come to reestablish order and bring forth a shining new age. Muradin's remaining clansmen here will take his body back to Ironforge. You cannot know how deep are my sympathies. I know that this letter offers small consolation, but I felt you should learn of Muradin's death as soon as possible. You have lost a brother, and I have lost a valued friend.
May the Light preserve our peoples,
— Prince Arthas Menethil
