The League of Legends video game features many voice actors for the wide cast of characters in the game. The characters may either come as non-playable characters (NPCs), or as playable champions, which are a large majority of the cast. The champions reside in the fictional world of Runeterra, whose landscape and geography has been significantly altered by the excessive use of magic in past disputes and wars. In order to prevent further damage to the land, a group of powerful magicians known as summoners have decided to form the "League of Legends", an organization which would serve to mediate future political conflicts through sanctioned battles within the Institute of War. Although the Institute of War is primarily to keep peace between the two major city states, Demacia and Noxus, individuals who enter the League of Legends can come from a wide range of regions in Runeterra. Those that have been chosen to participate in these battles are considered champions. With the exception of Urf the Manatee, a fake champion created as part of an April Fool's Day joke, all champions are playable characters.[1] Each champion possesses different strengths and skills that define their play-styles. Most champions, with the exceptions of Jayce, Elise, Lee Sin, Gnar, Rek'Sai, Quinn, Nidalee and Rengar, have four active abilities and one passive ability. While each champion's background is explored in their lore, the background of the League of Legends world is subject to change—as are the champions' interactions—as of 2014 when developers Riot expressed an interest in expanding the game's mythos.[2][3]
