Arthur Cohen (born 1978) is a French philosopher, art critic, and academic publisher. He is known for his work in aesthetics, logic, business and financial ethics, art criticism, and for serving as Chairman of Éditions Hermann.

Education

Arthur Cohen studied philosophy at Paris X Nanterre University, Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne and at the École normale supérieure (Ulm). He holds the agrégation in philosophy and earned a certificate in corporate finance from HEC Paris.

He began doctoral research on a thesis entitled «Méthode et morale», which explored the intersections between logic and ethics and the ways in which formal reasoning informs moral thought. Although the thesis was never completed, this work laid the foundation for several of his later publications at the crossroads of logic and normative philosophy.

Academic work

Arthur Cohen initially specialized in the philosophy of logic. He has published academic articles on various topics, notably on Diderot's philosophy of art. As an art critic, he has written numerous essays and reviews on Diderot, Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Matisse, and Picasso in various journals and exhibition catalogues. He translated key works such as Graham Priest’s Explorer les contradictions (2022) and Judea Pearl’s Le Livre des pourquoi (2024) for Hermann.[1]

Since 2018, he has served on the scientific board of the Doctoral School of Philosophy (ED 487), coordinating research across the University of Lyon, ENS Lyon, and the University of Grenoble.[1]

He has extensively written on business and financial ethics. In the French magazine ÉcoRéseau Business, he was the Ethics & Finance columnist, covering issues such as corporate responsibility, regulatory reform and financial transparency.[2] He also co-authored a report for the United Nations titled Ethics and finance, with Emmanuel Rocque, Jean Baechler, Jacques de Larosière, Jean Peyrelevade, Jean-Claude Trichet, in 2014.[1][3][4]

Publishing career

Arthur Cohen joined Éditions Hermann in 2003, became Editorial Director in 2004, served as CEO from 2006 to 2018, and has been Chairman since 2006.[5][6]

In 2006, under his leadership, the publisher launched multiple new collections—including musicology, philosophy, social sciences, dance, epistemology, digital culture, and history of science—praised by Le Monde des Livres as a « petite révolution » (small revolution) in editorial direction.[7][5] Eyrolles commented: « Since 2006, the house is presided by Arthur Cohen, who surrounded himself with leading intellectuals to redefine its editorial policy ».[8] La Cause Littéraire noted that, under his leadership, the prestige of the house « continues to attract […] many leading intellectuals ».[9]

In 2025, he founded the U.S. branch, Hermann Press Corporation, in New York City.[6]
