Artists at Risk is an institution focused on the human rights of cultural practitioners, providing persecuted artists of most disciplines, as well as curators, critics, scholars and other related professions,  with emergency relocation, often in residencies, and with professional support. It was founded in 2013 by Marita Muukkonen and Ivor Stodolsky.[citation needed]

History[edit]

In 2007 Ivor Stodolsky and Marita Muukkonen founded Perpetuum Mobile, “a curatorial vehicle which brings together art, practice and enquiry”, working in Nordic, European and other international arenas. Perpetuum Mobile has worked on themes related to dissenting, oppositional and underground art, both historical and contemporary. Its first major project on the Soviet nonconformist art of the perestroika period[1] was followed by work on art and dissent under Putin.[2]

Similar themes were explored in the context of the Egyptian revolution of 2011 and the Arab Spring, and in exhibitions featuring artists from global movements including the Indigados, the Occupy movement, the Gezi Park Protests and the Bolotnaya Square protests, among others.[3]

Awards[edit]

Perpetuum Mobile / Artists at Risk won the European Parliament‘s  CIVI EUROPAEO PRAEMIUM (the “European Citizen’s Prize”) in 2016.

AR-Safe Haven Helsinki won the Annual Art Act Award in Finland in August 2016.[4]

Perpetuum Mobile / Artists at Risk was awarded the Thematic State Prize of Finland, in December 2017.[5]

Campaigns[edit]

The #FreeGalal Campaign[edit]

On 31 July 2018, Galal El-Behairy was sentenced to three years in prison following lyrics he wrote for Balaha, a song critical of Egypt's authoritarian regime, which was performed by Ramy Essam. Together with his book of poetry, The Finest Women on Earth ( خير نسوان الأرض), his forthright critique of Egyptian authorities earned him a three-year sentence. Despite being conditionally released on 25 April 2019 from a further impending civilian court case, Galal remains imprisoned. Artists at Risk, along with partners including PEN International, Freemuse,[6] continues a campaign for Galal El-Behairy’s release.[7]

Pussy Riot, Sweden[edit]

In February of 2019, following the decision of the Stockholm Migration Court to return Lusine Dzjanyan and Alexey Knedlyakovsky to Russia where they have previously faced imprisonment and violence, Artists at Risk wrote a letter addressed to The Minister of Justice of the Government of Sweden and The Stockholm Migration Court, which was co-signed by Svenska PEN, Finnish Pen, Safemuse, and PEN America.[8] In late April 2019 the Swedish authorities overturned their original decision, granting Lusine Djanyan, Alexey Knedlyakovsky and their children the right to asylum in Sweden.

Fatoş İrwen, Turkey[edit]

Artists at Risk advocated for the release and just treatment of Fatoş İrwen.[9] Since 2016, İrwen faced harsh prison conditions under charges designed to silence dissident freedom of expression and action in Turkey under President Tayyip Erdogan’s authoritarian regime. Her work was shown in the Artists at Risk Pavilion exhibitions held in Helsinki in 2019 and in Berlin 2018. Fatos Irwen was released from a jail in early March 2020.[10]
