Arya Linux (stylized as AryaLinux) is an Indian Linux Distribution, based on LFS (Linux From Scratch). It is built entirely from source code using instructions from the LFS and BLFS books.[1]

Arya Linux was built to suite the Indian flavor, and to do things the Indian way. It is named after Arya-Varth (ancient name of India).

Arya Linux is built primarily for Linux enthusiasts who wanted to built their own (Linux) distributions from scratch.[2] Since Arya Linux itself was built on the foundations of LFS and BLFS, enthusiasts wanting to do so have a proper operating system, as Arya Linux provides all the tools and platform to do so.[3][4]Since it's inception, many people have used Arya Linux to create their own Linux Distributions.[5]Arya Linux can also be used as a primary software development operating system, as it has native support for many programming languages. Arya Linux has many scripting languages as well as procedural and object oriented languages' interpreter/compilers, either pre-installed, or available in the official repository.

Other than that, Arya Linux can be used by Distro-hoppers, as a daily driver.[6] It supports all functionalities of a general-purpose distribution, such as playing videos, browsing the web, etc.[7]

History

Arya Linux was made by Chandrakant Singh in 2015.[8] However, he had the idea of creating his own operating system since 2001. It took him 2 years to come up with a CLI based OS. He had to go through many resources, including Bran's kernel development tutorial. Singh started his Linux journey with Red Hat (before it became Fedora) and later switched to Ubuntu. In 2007, he read Linux From Scratch, and that is when he got the idea for an operating system, completely by himself. Earlier, he had made an operating system by remastering Ubuntu.[9] In his own words,

I manually compiled my first LFS in 2 weeks and then gnome 2 desktop environment in another 2 months. In 2008, at the end of it, I had an OS to flaunt which could play songs using xmms and videos using xine. I wanted to automate the whole process so that it would'nt take so long the next time I wanted to build it. jhalfs was too difficult for me to understand and use and so I created a build script out of my bash history to build the second version. From then every time I got a chance I would work on enhancing the build scripts to build better versions till a releasable version was ready in 2015.[9][10]

Package Management

Arya Linux ships with it's own package management system, known as AryaLinux Packaging System a.k.a (alps).

As of June 2020, around 50~60 official alps packages are available.[11] Out of these, 26 packages are pre-installed. These can be further updated and upgraded to their latest versions post installation. These packages include Firefox and Chromium(browser), Libre Office Suite(Office), gtk(GUI apps) and Transmission(torrent app).[12]You can install 25~30 other applications via alps. These include utilities such as Vim text-editor, samba(file sharing utility), openSSH, nautilus and many others. The official repositories also contain command line support for various other programming languages, such as Python, Java (openJDK), qt, PHP, Perl etc. The GCC and G++ compilers for C and C++ come pre-installed. For more information on alps, click here.

GNOME Version of Arya Linux come with the GNOME tweaks tool pre-installed.

The number of packages in alps is very scarce, hence users can opt to use docker or flatpak. Arya Linux comes with built in support for docker and flatpak and thus their repositories are at your disposal if you are looking for applications outside Arya Linux repositories.[5][13]

However, in 2020, we got to see two releases, in the space of a months - Version 2.1 in January 2020, and the latest release, Version 2.4 in March 2020, similar to a semi-rolling release model.[19]

Getting Arya Linux

You can get Arya Linux either from their official website or from SourceForge.

Installation

Like all modern operating system installations, we can install Arya Linux with the help of a USB device. We can burn the ISO file download from the above mentioned websites to our USB device with software such as Rufus(Windows Hosts), or BalenaEtcher for either of Windows, MacOS or Linux distributions. Alternatively, you can also use the dd command in Linux terminal to make the bootable USB.[20]

After making the bootable USB, insert your USB device in your computer, and select to boot from it from your boot-menu (See your motherboard manufacturer's website). After that, you will be taken to Arya Linux Live Environment, and there, you will be logged in as root user. Password for root user is given below.[21]

NOTE to reviewer (will be removed later): I am NOT Chandrakant Singh, I don't even know him personally. I just use an OS made by him (which is this), and I thought I should have a wiki page. I am entirely new to this wiki article writing thing and I am not able to understand your requirements. At first we are asked to write in own words, which I have done. Then you ask to cite it. How can I site it if I am using my own words. Ok let's say I site, it, there are very little news channels which talk tech or linux in particular. I have still cited all of them still, I am not getting how many more do you want? Are you under an impression that I own all these sites? No, I am just a common man who thinks a product should have it's wiki page. And a little google search should show you one by one all the news channels that I have cited, because the top 3 (google search) pages are the only ones that are there. This is not an article about something everyone knows about. The primary reason I am writing this or wanting to write this is that more people should know about it when they search it, and wikipedia is the platform for doing so. I need your help to understand what I should do so it becomes acceptable. I already have cited the handful of news sources I could find in this topic. The whole article is my work written in my own words. Yet I am not sure how many more citations do you need.

"The word "source" in Wikipedia has three meanings: the work itself (for example, a document, article, paper, or book), the creator of the work (for example, the writer), and the publisher of the work (for example, Cambridge University Press). All three can affect reliability." Here it is an OS, and I am not creator of the OS but I am providing as much information I can about it. Please enlighten me!
