Aryan Nehra (born 2 January 2004) is an Indian competitive swimmer specialising in distance freestyle and individual medley events. He holds Indian national records in the 400m, 800m, and 1500 meters freestyle (long course), and the 400 meters individual medley (short course). He has represented India at three World Aquatics Championships and the 2023 Asian Games.
Early life and education
Nehra was born and raised in India. He attended the British International School, Phuket in Thailand from 2017 to 2021, before moving to the United States to attend the University of Florida, where he competed for the Florida Gators swimming and diving programme from 2021 to 2025.[1] Following his studies, he relocated to Antibes, France, where he trains and competes with CN Antibes.
Career
Early career (2017–2018)
Nehra first gained international attention in 2017, winning two bronze medals at the Asian Age Group Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.[2] He made his debut at both the World Aquatics Championships and the World Junior Swimming Championships in 2019.
2022
Nehra competed at the 2022 World Junior Swimming Championships, continuing his development on the international stage.
2023
At the 76th Senior National Aquatic Championship held in Hyderabad in July 2023, Nehra won four gold medals in the 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle, 1500m freestyle, and 400m individual medley, setting multiple national records in the process. He was adjudged the best male swimmer of the meet.[3]
At the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, Nehra clocked 8:00.76 in the 800m freestyle heats, equalling the best Indian time in the event, and finished 27th overall.[4] He also competed in the 1500m freestyle, finishing 25th in the heats.
At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, Nehra broke the Indian national record in the 1500m freestyle, clocking 15:20.91 and finishing seventh in the event, bettering the previous national record of 15:23.66 set by Advait Page in 2021.[5]
2025
Nehra represented India at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, competing in the 800m and 400m freestyle events.[6]
