Asaii is a San Francisco-based music analytics startup specializing in using algorithmic data to spot up-and-coming artists before they hit the charts[1]. The company tracked social networks, streaming services, radio, online news, and TV shows to understand popularity of artists and songs[2][3]. The employees of the company were acqui-hired by Apple Inc in October 2018[4].

History[edit]

Asaii was founded by former Apple engineer Sony Theakanath (CEO) in August 2016[5]. In early 2017, Asaii received seed money from The House Fund, a UC Berkeley venture fund[6][7]. Asaii grew quietly as a private beta, serving record labels, Fortune 500 companies, and booking agents[8][9].

On March 2018, Asaii launched publicly at SXSW[10]. On May 2018, Asaii was named a MIDEMLab Finalist, joining past finalists such as Soundcloud, Next Big Sound, and Kickstarter[11].

On October 14, 2018, Apple Inc hired the founders of the company to improve its recommendations for Apple Music. It was widely reported that the company was acquired, however further details revealed that the assets and IP were not retained by Apple and were scrapped. [12][13][14].
