Ashish S. Vazirani is an American military official and former Navy officer who is the nominee to be an assistant secretary of defense for personnel and readiness in the Biden administration.

Early life and education[edit]

Vazirani's family immigrated to the United States from India after fleeing Pakistan when he was three years old.[1] Vazirani's father fought in the Vietnam War as a member of the Marines, while his son is currently part of the service. His mother served as a staff member in both the Maryland Legislature and the United States Congress.

Vazirani obtained a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Vanderbilt University, as well as both a Master of Engineering from the McCormick School of Engineering and an M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.[2]

Career[edit]

Vazirani has an extensive history of working for organizations promoting military benefits. He previously worked with the company A2O Strategies, LLC, where he provided services to various enterprises regarding growth strategies.[2] He was the Executive Director and CEO of the National Military Family Association (NMFA), where he specialized in giving strategic oversight while also trying to take care of military families.[3] He also worked at the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) where he specialized in standardizing military programs.[4]

Vazirani was selected to be a member of the National Academies of Sciences, specifically on the Engineering and Medicine’s Committee due to his work with military families. He has also worked with various tech and pharmaceutical companies.[2]

Military service[edit]

From 1986 to 1993, Vazirani served in the Navy as a submarine officer.[2]

Biden administration[edit]

On September 27, 2021, President Joe Biden nominated Vazirani to be an assistant secretary of defense for personnel and readiness.[2][5] Hearings on his nomination were held by the Senate Armed Services Committee on October 28, 2021. The committee favorably reported his nomination to the Senate floor on December 8, 2021. His nomination is pending before the full Senate.[6]

Personal life[edit]

He grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland and still resides there. Vazirani has a wife, Deborah, as well as a son and daughter.[2]
