Ashwani Jain
Ashwani Jain is a non-profit director, political activist, former Obama Administration Official, and former candidate for Governor of Maryland in 2022.
Early life[edit]
Jain was born in Rockville, Maryland to immigrant parents. At the age of 13, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, finishing treatments after four rounds of chemotherapy. He attended the University of Maryland, College Park from 2007 to 2011, graduating with experience in business management and political science. Jain then completed graduate studies at George Washington University in 2017. Throughout high school and college, he volunteered on Barack Obama's presidential campaign.
Career[edit]
Starting in 2009, Ashwani began his tenure with Organizing for America as the Maryland Student Director.[1] With OFA, he advocated for the passage of the Affordable Care Act, Student Loan Debt Forgiveness Program, and the Maryland Dream Act. Throughout Fall of 2012, Ashwani served as a regional field director for Barack Obama's re-election campaign in Montgomery County.
In the Obama White House, he began with the Office of Presidential Personnel as an outreach and recruitment staff assistant. In early 2015, he worked as the Deputy White House Liaison for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Under his leadership, his team focused on low-income rental assistance, decreasing veteran homelessness, and implementation of the National Housing Trust Fund.[2]
During the Summer of 2016, Jain worked in Vice President Joe Biden's office as the Cancer Moonshot Summit Director of Outreach.[3] Beginning in September, 2016 Ashwani served as the Associate Director of External Affairs in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in the Office of Secretary Sylvia Burwell.[4]
Since May, 2019 Jain has been with the National Kidney Foundation as a program director.[5]
Political career[edit]
Upon graduate school graduation, Jain ran in the 2018 Democratic Primary for Montgomery County Council for an at-large seat.[6] He placed 7th of 32 candidates in the primary. During the campaign Ashwani was endorsed by Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary Julián Castro.[7][8][9] In the election voters were allowed to vote for up to four candidates.[10]
2022 Maryland Gubernatorial Campaign[edit]
On January 27, 2021, Ashwani launched a campaign for Governor of Maryland, doing so he became the second Democrat to enter the race.[11][12][13] In January 2022, Jain announced LaTrece Hawkins Lytes as his running mate.[14] Jain participated in 22 debates throughout the campaign cycle and eventually placed 7th on primary day.
Priorities[edit]
Maryland Now Plan[edit]
One of Jain's signature proposed programs, the "Maryland Now Plan" would have eliminated the state income tax for workers making less than $400,000 (95% of Maryland), created the first guaranteed jobs program in the nation, made public transit free for all residents, legalized marijuana and expunged the records of the wrongfully imprisoned, and imposed anti-corruption measures in relation to campaign finance.[15]
Transparency[edit]
Jain worked to ensure transparency throughout his campaign. All events hosted by the campaign were free; in addition, he did not accept donations from developers, businesses, PACs, or polluters. The campaign sought to be "100% resident run."[16]
