Aslan Başpınar (born 1966) is a sculptor working in Ankara, Turkey. He is known for his figurative sculptures and compositions, especially for monuments of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in various places of Turkey.[1]

Biography[edit]

Başpınar was born in 1966 and lived in a small village in Yozgat until he started studying sculpture at Gazi University in Ankara.[1] His practice on sculpture started at a very early age, his works made out of clay and mud as a child attracted attention of engineers and professors from General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (Turkey) during a small visit in the village and this mediated his move to Ankara in 1982 to study sculpture in Gazi University and his career as a sculptor started. [2]

In 1987 he started working in workshops of various sculptors until he opened his own workshop in 2000 in Ostim, Ankara. [1]

Works[edit]

Throughout his career, he is specialized in monument sculpting, one of his late works Kızılcagün Monument, a composition narrating Atatürk's arrival in Ankara during Turkish War of Independence, stands in the middle of Ankara since 2020. [3][4][5][6][7] Another major work consists of two reliefs narrating the establishment of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and Atatürk's arrival in Samsun in 19 Mayıs 1919, these reliefs are part of many works in Atatürk ve Kurtuluş Savaşı Müzesi in Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
