Biography[edit]
James Doran-Webb is a British sculptor from Devon, England. His family were antique dealers and moved around Europe and America throughout his childhood. He returned to the UK to study for his A-levels, in London, England. Upon completion, Doran-Webb decided to continue to run his stall at the Portobello Road Market, where he sold antiques. Due to the success of the stall, he decided to shelve his initial plan to study History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art.
He soon found himself travelling once again, this time with a company that sold custom jewellery in New York. Not long after starting, his boss saw promise in young Doran-Webb's abilities and decided it would be of value for him to understand the production process in greater detail. This lead to his first visit to Cebu, Philippines.
Doran-Webb decided to call Cebu home shortly after his arrival. He soon realised there was an abundance of driftwood in the area and decided to set up a studio to begin making driftwood sculptures.
Although his pieces have been showcased all over the world, he still calls Cebu home. He has done so for the past 30 years.
Most notable pieces[edit]
Mag-Anak[edit]
Doran-Webb was commissioned to sculpt 'Mag-Anak' by Enchanted Kingdom in Santa Rosa, Laguna. It is currently[when?] being displayed at Agila: The EKsperience. Mag-Anak is estimated to have taken Doran-Webb and his team 12,800 hours to complete.[2]
Galloping Thoroughbreds[edit]
The year of the wooden horse, in 2014, was the inspiration for the ‘Galloping Thoroughbreds’. Commissioned by Dr. Tan,[vague] this piece is being displayed at Gardens by the bay, a nature park, situated in the centre of Singapore. Each horse weighs roughly 1 ton and is able to support the weight of up to two adults.[3]
The Wyvern on the Temple[edit]
Towering over the visitors and the other sculptures, 'The Wyvern on the Temple' was the centre-piece of Doran-Webb's stand at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2019.[4]
