The Association for Intelligent Information Management (AIIM), founded as the National Microfilm Association, later the National Micrographics Association and then Association for Information and Image Management, is a nonprofit membership organization. AIIM provides education, market research, and certification for information professionals.
History[edit]
AIIM was founded in 1943 as the National Microfilm Association, changing to National Micrographics Association[1] to reflect changing technologies. It became the "Association for Information and Image Management" in 1982. The name would change again in 2018 to the "Association for Intelligent Information Management", maintaining the AIIM acronym.[2]
In 2000, AIIM created the term Enterprise Content Management (ECM), which referred to the strategies, methods, and tools used throughout the lifecycle of an organization's documents, and other content, that relate to the organization's processes.[citation needed]
At the AIIM Conference 2017, AIIM agreed with a blog post published by Gartner titled "The Death of ECM and Birth of Content Services" that "ECM is now dead (kaput, finite, an ex-market name)." AIIM announced that the term Enterprise Content Management would be replaced by the term Intelligent Information Management (IIM). This new term would encompass the management of data and content, not just content by itself.[3]
Information Management Training[edit]
In 2006, AIIM launched its first training course titled ECM Master Class. Today, AIIM offers training on a variety of information management technologies, including:
- Business Process Management
- Electronic Records Management
- Enterprise Content Management
- Information Governance
- SharePoint and Office 365
- Taxonomy and Metadata
These courses are available online and in an in-person classroom setting. At the AIIM Conference 2017, AIIM announced they had trained over 60,000 students.
Certified Information Professional (CIP)[edit]
AIIM set out to create a certification for information professionals as a means of standardizing on the body of knowledge necessary to be successful in this profession. AIIM worked with industry experts and focus groups to define this body of knowledge and launched a certification and test based on it in 2011.
In July 2016, the Certified Information Professional exam was updated to reflect changes in information management technology and behavior.
By 2017, more than 1,500 information professionals had earned the CIP.
The AIIM Conference[edit]
The AIIM Conference was officially launched in 2012. The annual event brings together over 600 attendees, consisting mostly of information management end-users, from over 25 countries to see presentations and take part in discussions on the best practices, current trends, and top issues facing the information management industry.[4]
Executive Leadership Council Summit[edit]
The AIIM Executive Leadership Council has two delegations, the Americas and European. Each delegation meets twice a year for a think tank summit where participants discuss Information Management-related topics such as the impact of these technologies on the workplace and future organizational transformations.
Findings from the summits are published as AIIM Trendscape reports which forecast the changes the information management industry will incur over the next 24 months and set priorities to take advantage of these changes.[5]
