Athletics Essendon is a track and field and XCR club located in Melbourne, Australia.[9] The club has had representatives at the past 15 consecutive Olympic and Commonwealth Games. The club has had a number of athletes compete across a range of notable competitions including; World Athletics Championships, World Para Athletics Championships, IAAF Continental Cup, World Athletics Cross Country Championships, World Athletics U20 Championships, Diamond League and Universiade. Athletics Essendon has won the H. H. Hunter Memorial Shield 20 times, 13 of which have occurred since 2000, with the most recent win in 2021.[10][11] The shield is named after Herbert Humphreys Hunter, Captain of the 7th. Battalion 1st. Division A.I.F,[12] and is awarded to the best overall team performance at the Victorian Track and Field Championships.[13]
History[edit]
Essendon Harriers became affiliated with the Victorian Amateur Athletic Association (V.A.A.A)[14][15][16] on April 14th 1897.[17] In 1906, Gregory "Dad" Wheatley[18][19] became the club's first international representative, competing at the 1906 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.[20]
Aberfeldie athletics track opened in 1972.[21] Six years later the Essendon Amateur Athletic Club merged with East Melbourne Harriers under the name Essendon-E.M.H.[22] The merge saw Australian coach Neville Sillitoe OAM [23] join the club and in doing so brought across a number of sprints and jumps champions,[24] including Peter Norman.[25][26][27][28][29] In 1993 Essendon-E.M.H merged with Essendon-Aberfeldie and became Athletics Essendon.[30][31]
Competitions[edit]
Victorian Track & Field Championships[32][33][edit]
The Victorian Track and Field Championships are held annually across two weekends at Lakeside Stadium. The H. H. Hunter Memorial Shield is named after Herbert Humphreys Hunter and is awarded to the best overall team performance at the Victorian Track and Field Championships.
Athletics Victoria Shield League (2019 - Current)[edit]
The Athletics Victoria Shield League replaced the Athletics Victoria Shield competition at the beginning of the 2019/20 track and field season. Clubs compete across a 10-round season for a place in the Playoffs.[34][35]
