The Atlantic Forum is a youth-led Euro-atlantic nonprofit promoting NATO youth engagement and transatlantic values among youth (aged 18-35). The forum was launched on the 70th anniversary of NATO on the 4th of April 2019 during the official festivities in Washington D.C., celebrating the North Atlantic Treaty that was signed on the 4th of April 1949.

The NGO was founded by Dutch Military Captain John Jacobs, and Dr Igor Merheim-Eyre, a Czech-Slovak born British national working for the European Parliament. The Atlantic Forum has a virtual office in The Hague and operates largely digitally through a network of volunteer and paid staff.

History[edit]

The Atlantic Forum was founded on the 4th of April 2019 on the occasion of NATO's 70th birthday during the NATO70 celebrations in Washington D.C. with the support of Atlantic Council, GMF, and Munich Security Conference. Its initial goal was to gather alumni of various NATO Young Leader Programs such as GLOBSEC's Globsec Young Leaders Forum GMF's Young Transatlantic Network (YTN), YATA Germany's NATO's Future and LATO's Riga Future Leaders Forum.

Its founders, both alumni of various of such programs, had previously served in the board of the Youth Atlantic Treaty Association, building forward on a decade old legacy of NATO & transatlantic youth engagement.

Patronage[edit]

Atlantic Forum's membership spans 80 countries and a network of hundreds of young professionals. Students and young professionals from NATO member and partner countries between the age of 18-35 can become a patron (member) of the Atlantic Forum by paying a small yearly fee. Through patronage, Atlantic Forum is able to pay for its programming and services. Patrons are largely drawn from NATO-sponsored young leader programs and have a varied background from military, academia, journalists, policy, and industry that span a diverse array of sectors.[2]

Franchises[edit]

Atlantic Forum operates with a network of Franchises, with established groups in United States, Canada, Benelux, United Kingdom, Greece, Turkey, V4 countries and the Baltic states and thematic networks providing a global network of interconnection and dialogue.

Campaigns[edit]

A large part of Atlantic Forum's online activities are engagement activities using social media and communication strategies to inform young professionals about NATO. Partnering with NATO Public Diplomacy Division, Atlantic Forum supports the #WeAreNATO campaign and started the #NATOEducationMonth. As the Atlantic Forum is independent and outside of NATO's formal systems, it gives creative freedom, the use of memes and other youthful ways to draw attention. This approach led to an interesting mix of engaging with both young professionals and NATO officials and other stakeholders. In addition the Atlantic Forum run's its own small campaigns such as #WomenAreNATO ahead of International Women's Day.

#WeAreNATO[edit]

The #WeAreNATO campaign is NATO's largest public diplomacy effort to date. It focuses on video and imagery showing the daily life of NATO soldiers and tells their personal stories. AsYATA president founder John Jacobs was featured in a #WeAreNATO video when deployed in Lithuania as part of the enhanced Forward Presence.

#NATOEducationMonth[edit]

Atlantic Forum started the #NATOEducationMonth in March 2019 in the lead up to #NATO70 and the launch of the Atlantic Forum. Starting the 4th of March, each day highlights one NATO ally leading up to NATO's anniversary on the 4th of April. In March 2019 North Macedonia was not a country yet but was included in the campaign nevertheless. The 2019, 2022 and 2021 editions of the #NATOEducationMonth were a joyous occasion celebrating NATO and transatlanticism. With the Russian aggressive war in Ukraine it was decided to have a more sober edition of the campaign with a focus on highlighting how each individual member country of NATO is supporting Ukraine.

Conferences[edit]

Bi-annually the Atlantic Forum organizes the Spring Conference, taking place on the weekend closest to NATO's (and Atlantic Forum's) founding date, the 4th of April. It's sister conference, the Autumn conference takes place the weekend closest to the 4th of October. Atlantic Forum's conferences are known for a successful concept of combining young professionals with high-level speakers such as NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană[3], Jamie Shea, NATO WPS Clare Hutchinson, ASG ESC David van Weel, Chairman of the Military Committee Rob Bauer, and IMCSS's Tom Middendorp & Ben Bekkering, as well as cooperating with high level think tanks such as Atlantic Council, Globsec and the German Marshall Fund[4].

Champions of Transatlantic Youth[edit]

Following Atlantic Forum's original goal to create a network of alumni of existing NATO orientated young leader programs it launched its 'Champions of Transatlantic Youth' initiative in 2019. The initiative was inspired by remarks of former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander TransformationGerman Admiral Manfred Nielson who stated at both GLOBSEC 2019 and NATO70 that "if [he] could he would replace 30% of [his] staff with young professionals". The Champions of Transatlantic Youth (or COTY) for short aims at gathering funds from government and corporate sponsors in order to cover the cost of individual patronage of those who would not be able to pay for it themselves. Individuals can also join the COTY effort and support a specific individual (for example a mentee) or define a specific target (for example "women" or "a young professional from turkey").

Individual COTY supporters include: retired Dutch General H. Damen, Flemish politician Theo Francken, and Ukrainian Military attaché V. Denysov.

Centre of Excellence Engagement Initative[edit]

The Centre of Excellence Engagement Initiative was a project Atlantic Forum founder John Jacobs developed during his presidency of the Youth Atlantic Treaty Association with ad hoc projects with the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence, NATO Command and Control Centre of Excellence[5]. and NATO CIMIC Centre of Excellence. Following the launch of Atlantic Forum the initiative was further developed by Lisa Homel which led to a formal partnership with the Chairman of the NATO Centre of Excellence Director's Conference Italian Carabinieri Colonel Giuseppe De Magistris[6].

Publications[edit]

Atlantica[edit]

Atlantica is the main publication of Atlantic Forum and a showcase of perspectives by rising leaders in transatlantic security. Financially supported by NATO Public Diplomacy, it is an online magazine designed to give young professionals a chance to hone their writing and analytical skills by participating in a rigorous editorial process and to present insightful and creative articles to the broader foreign policy community. [7]

Our Views[edit]

Based on the idea that articles by young professionals are much less promoted by large media organizations, and rarely become an 'evergreen', Atlantic Forum offers a republication service for young professional articles[8]. The articles include the original publication, such as from NATO Review or high level think tanks, such as RUSI[9] or translated versions of the original document if it is in a foreign language, as for example in the popular danish newspaper Altinget[10]
